Mums- cut off buds?

I'm in Home Depot in NY and already see little hardy mums with buds. If I buy now, should I plant and cut off buds so they they bloom in the fall with the rest of my mums? Or leave them and dead head and hope for a rebloom?

how about you just walk on by.. and by them closer to bloom time for yours ...

im thinking these are disposable impulse buys.. meant to bloom immediately.. and basically be done.. in a month or 2 ...

not really plants that you are going to force into matching your garden plants ...

or.. even better ... buy a couple.. leave one to do its thing ... cut another back.. like you would prune your own right now.. for fall bloom..e tc ...

back when i learned.. i didnt have a WWW .. i just experimented ... and get this.. 30 years later.. i remember my own experiments... but i dont always remember random things i read in books ... or on my gizmo ..

they are small.. presumably cheap.. wing it ...lol

One of my three year old + mums in the garden is blooming, others are in bud. I've never pruned them back in July, maybe I will try that.

I cut back mums until about the 4th of July. Most often they have to get buds and a bloom or two before I notice they need cutting back. And I am fairly ruthless in cutting them back because I like a strong plant that doesn't flop with all the bloom in the fall. Marcy

I have a question... One of my mums is pretty large, starting to bloom. However it has gotten so large that the front half of it wants to fall over because it sits on a hill and a few pieces have broken off... Should I cut off pieces that still want to fall or just let nature take its course? ALso it already has a bunch of blooms on it but would really like the fall color ...is it to late to pinch back? If not, how much should I pinch off? Thank you

I guess I would like to see a scientific article confirming the very common (and admittedly reasonable!) idea that a plant diverts energy from growing its roots in order to produce flowers and that it's just a one-way transfer of energy. It makes complete sense, but I'd like to see more of the botany and biology of it. I'm just not 100% convinced that producing flowers is a net loss to the roots, end of story. I wonder if it's possible that any growth process of the plant also grows the roots, and that there are other variables involved. But maybe I'm completely wrong. Clearly growing the leaves sends energy to the root, but maybe growing flowers just results in a net loss to the roots, and that is the end of the story. Maybe I'm just self-justifying because I want to see flowers on my plants -- yes, even the first few months after I plant them in September! I just can't stand the idea of cutting them off as soon as I put them in the ground. :-(((

We have had folks discuss doing their perennial bed cleanup with a mower with well-sharpened blades set as high as possible or with a strimmer/weed whacker. They sometimes won't cut cleanly, so I wouldn't do that on a plant that was fussy, but mums are fairly difficult to kill IME. I use old fashioned hedge shears since a few whacks and I am done. They have long handles, and if I bend my knees, I don't have to bend my back.

Well, they were $3, so I popped off the buds, it will be an experiment!

I just plucked off the buds, I didn't cut it down, they were tiny to begin with... we will see what happens
