Comments (57)Here's a few of my giants. Dasylirion longissima. Foliage tops out at about 7 feet. Stalk is from last year's bloom and was probably 16-18 feet. My baby Nolina nelsonii. Bloomed last year for the first time and is now bifurcating to develop two heads. A group of younger N. nelsonii. Nine foot cannas. Some 10 foot barrel cacti. Trichocereus terscheckii. These babies haven't bloomed yet and will eventually branch to resemble saguaro. A cuddly little seven foot Agave americana. Six foot common elephant ears under a very juvenile Sabal mexicana. The Sabal mexicana's same age sibling. Lastly, my favorite tree on the property. The burl at the base is 7 feet high and about six feet in diameter. The canopy covers about 6,000 square feet. A youngster -can't be much over 500 years old....See Morea fall crop exeperiment
Comments (67)I've done it many times (when the weather cooperated with a mild October) into "tricking" an early determinate to successfully produce a second harvest by cutting it down to within a foot after getting its maximum harvest. You folks in the South should be able to do the same even with mid season bush tomatoes, since you get a month or more extra warm weather than we do here in Maryland. Here is Lime Green Salad from this season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7-24-2017 update: Still very healthy with lots of blossoms. Yesterday picked 5 tomatoes (largest was at 6+oz), today 5 more (one was the biggest so far at 7.11 oz). Average is about 3.5 oz. So far, over 45 fruits harvested, I expect a few more --- not bad for a total of about 10 lbs from a 2.5 feet tall plant. It has become very juicy and the flavor is even better now. I'll rate its taste at 9. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7-25-2017 -- picked a couple of ripe ones and a handful of green tomatoes. Then, decided I won't wait a few weeks for the dozens of blooms to fruit and then have the plant die, but cut it down to about one foot. I've done it before (when the weather cooperated with a mild October) into "tricking" a determinate to successfully produce a second harvest. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After cutting Lime Green Salad dwarf tomato plant down to nearly bare bones five days ago (see above pic) --- here are today's pics (7-30-2017). Not only is it bursting with new healthy foliage, but it has set some blossoms already! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8-13-2017 update: 19 days after cutting down this little WONDER --- it is super healthy and ready to give a 2nd crop! Two feet tall and growing, lots of blossoms and a couple of fruits already set --- AMAZING tomato dwarf plant !!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8-22-2017 update: Counted over 20 fruits set so far, from pea size to egg size -- setting a lot more fruit now, than before. Probably because it's mid-Summer, and thus setting faster than in the cooler Spring. Many dozens of blossoms that look ready to set lots more. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can see the entire thread here: http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/4690647/lime-green-salad-dwarf-tomato-is-anyone-else-growing-it Tony...See More2017 Blooming Dahlias
Comments (54)Of course!! I understand what your saying ! Soil samples are the ONLY way to go !!! I just picked up my boxs & soil bags from the extension office last week :) I too am working on my beds - even tho I'm going to add what's needed as far as the soil samples go. It's not enough by looking at my soil bc I still have A LOT OF SILT & SAND!! YUCK!! I'm constantly adding compost & tilling in / tucking in banana peels, chopped leaves, ect.. when I pull up my annuals for the year. In 3 years I went from straight grey sand w/o any tilthe, a lot of grubs & wireworms & no earth worms in sight -To, a lot of grey sand, some tilthe & more organic matter & earthworms!! I can actually dig into this bed & find earth worms!! Whohoooooooo! It wasn't like this before. I have a feeling it's going to take me years of working it before I get it how I want it but it'll get there! One of my empty beds I'm going to dig a trench and lasagna layer!! I can't wait ! I'm sure when it's ready to plant this will b my richest bed- I wish I could do this w/all of them but I have seedlings n transplants to go in:( Even tho we test our soil & add what's needed we still have to keep up a fertilizer regimen for the health of the plants & your formula is what I wanted to know. Do u spray your plants w/liquid seaweed once a week or use liquid compost ? Some bone, blood or kelp meal ? I was just curious as to what fertilizer regimen it is you use for your dahlia upkeep ? .... SO YOU JUST CAUGHT MY ATTENTION!!!!!! YOU KEEP BEES!!!!! This is what I want for Christmas!!!!! MORE THAN ANYTHING!! I did all my research & want to keep bees so bad! I've planted borage & other bee loving flowers. I had the neighbor till up 1/4th acre for a wild flower meadow I planted & the only bees I got where little green striped ones that looked more like a wasp than a bee :( it breaks my heart!! I'm going to buy all the supplies. My suit, smoker & a suit or 2 for my boys so they can learn to help & have a healthy respect for them. I do have to talk to all my neighbors ab using herbicide & chemicals first tho!! Otherwise it'll b a lost cause. Any advice on beekeeping? I'd love to know anything u think is important for me to know, that reading won't tell me. Also, do u have pics ? Do u harvest a little honey from the bees or allow them to keep it ? I truly respect the fact that u keep bees!! It's so awesome. More ppl should keep bees if it's a possibility. I've been wanting to for a few years but my neighbors opposed back when I lived in the city. Now, I'm in the country & many ppl in this area keep a lot of bee houses & provide honey for the local stores. It's great!! :) :) :)...See Morebossyvossy
