Thoughts or advice for chairs and size of rug for this FR?
I'm in the final stages of updating my family room after re doing the kitchen that is open to it. The pictures are with the sofas I plan to recover so they will be staying. I would like to get advice for other seating and how it can be placed. Was thinking of getting 2 small accent chairs to sit in front of the fireplace. The club chair currently in the picture is just for scale for the space. Also I will be replacing the rug and probably the coffee table. Any suggestions would be appreciated. So many openings in this room.. all furniture has to float.

Comments (16)You need to read the little box that has the CARTSAVINGS coupon code where they mention it's not valid for Surya rugs. I called them up and they said the coupon is not valid for the three rug manufacturers: Surya, Shaw and Sphinx. I told him it was very misleading as the coupon did not list any exclusions and I had wasted my time choosing a rug, only to find it was not valid. So, looks like $492 is the best price, but no impetitus to rush order today--unless I can find a rug that is not one of those brands. auntjen: Hopefully your rug is by a different manufacturer and you can make use of the discount. Comments (42)Love the new rug - the stronger color is such an asset in the space! Congrats on a great choice. I keep looking at the pix, and the one thing that keeps nagging at me is the positioning of the rug and the furniture. It feels like the sectional should be sitting more on the long side of the rug. I wonder if at some point, you would consider putting in a narrow console table or wall-mounted shelf to act like a console, behind the sectional on the long wall. It would be a great place for a pair of buffet style lamps, and you could center the two framed art pieces in between them. What I would like to see happen is that the console or shelf would push the sectional forward so that the last two sections of the side at the end of the room would be centered between the two windows. It would move the whole sectional on to the rug more. The chair would just need to slide right a bit, but still be legs on the rug. Once you do that, I would find a new home for the end table and lamp that are situated at the end of the sectional between it and the tall bookcase. I think that area feels crowded, and moving that would allow you to have some visual breathing room between the sectional and the tall bookcase. I would try to center the bookcase under the right set of high windows. Comments (52)I personally donâÂÂt care for the rug under the bed because you donâÂÂt have that much open floor space around it. As I think I mentioned when originally posted about it, if you had a lot of open floor space and were creating an island of the bed area, that would be one thing. But in your room, the rug is very close to the dresser, etc, so no visual breathing space there, and it comes up far enough under the bed that it looks like you just didnâÂÂt get a big enough rug - you need more open floor there, too, imo. I notice that the only place you seem to have looked for comforters is PB. There are a lot of other resources, as well as perhaps local stores for you to shop. I think sometimes we all get caught up in the convenience of shopping on line, and forget to do things locally, that there are things out there that even the online sites donâÂÂt have but are carried in the store, or are a past season item on sale that isnâÂÂt in a quantity worth showing on line. I think the first thing you should decide is how you want to use the bedding. If you are just thinking about keeping the new patterned comforter at the end of the bed, that is different and less impact that having the patterned piece covering most of the bed. If you want to use the matelasse as the primary bedding, that is a pretty casual, country (or french country, if you prefer) look, so you need to choose the other bedding so that it works with that feel. Your original bedding is much fancier and more formal than matelasse fits with. Comments (42)Running - I did get your point the first time. Yes, everything you listed is in the photo and has reasons I felt it belonged there. I won't address all of them, but the box holds books for our toddler. I'd rather see the box than a bunch of books since I have other toys in here. The decor items change regularly. Sometimes I keep it bare and other times not. That round end table and the buffet in my foyer are the only two places I create any type of vignettes. The rest of surface space in the house is pretty bare and practical. Yes, those are antlers on the wall. We're supposed to make a room reflect out lives and hunting is a part of ours. I wouldn't like my hockey sticks there. I can't just replace everything in the room. As for the main pieces, sometimes you have to work with what you have. I've already stated I don't plan to make any furniture purchases until we're going to redo the whole room and I have a plan. I wonder how the room would look if you just got rid of that chair (you said you don't use it I think) and all the other stuff barnacled around it and maybe some of the other furniture and decor items. I actually do sit in that chair to read and for conversation. For now, I will say at least it's really comfortable and fits my height well. Almost forgot the ottoman, but that gets used for feet and the shelf also neatly holds, and somewhat hides, certain toys. The decorative items are one thing, but I can't just take the furniture out of the room for the sake of it looking better. We actually are following Magnaverde's rule along with our rule of making things work until you can replace them. 6 years agoFlo.. current rug is a 8x10 and I would have got a 9x12 then but they didnt have it. I am going to look at fabrics for my sofas this week, but thinking in line with something in a solid light beige (Lord Help me now) or something lighter than what I have currently. I will start with chairs, if you think I have room for them? That is my first question. Judging from the pics, can you tell if they will looked cramped in that area.. even if they are smaller scale.. like 30x30 ish. and yes.. I know the tables will have to go. The one on far side is actually a old wash stand of my great grandmother's.. I will try to use it someplace as I cannot part with it. Lamps, picture over fireplace all can go since the accent color I used before was red...lots to change.
cawaps.. I will look at Basset. I have a source that can custom order and at a good discount, but Ive seen many that I think would be OK, but most are in solid colors.

6 years agoIm back with further questions. I have pretty much decided on chairs, but not crazy about the fabric selections in the line. This is the photo of the 2 fabrics together, the plain one is for the sofas.. and the print for the 2 chairs. But, Im not crazy about the busy print. Anyone have an opinion if a contrasting plain fabric might be better? I plan to do drapes and pillows, etc. so trying to keep it simple on the chairs.

6 years agojunco - The chairs Ive chosen are 30' wide, 7" smaller width wise than the chair in the picture and about the same height. ( I just used that for scale) They will be used only for occasional extra seating as we usually sit on the sofas. I'll attach the picture. (see bottom pic below) Here (see 2nd pic below) is the only other fabric offered by the chair manufacturer in a print that is good color wise, but again.. just wondering if better to go with solid color in chair. The first small print looks good, I just think in 2 chairs it might be too crazy psycho. Ha ha. I mean I will be looking at them more than sitting in them. The bigger print may be more pleasing, but didnt know if having that kind of design will date them.
Sofa fabric still up for final decision, but Ive ordered yard size samples and waiting on the one in the pic above to come. The first one below is same color, just a teeny bit different weave.
all these colors look a bit off in the pics than in the naked eye. Fabric sample in first is taken in my room against the paint in the room. The second is taken in the store, and bottom in different store is not the fabric, just the chair. thanks for your imput! I just need to make up my mind. Im driving myself crazy.carolinanana
6 years agoNot yet. Ive seen many online that I like, but will have to order in small size for color, and return, as too hard to do 9x12. If I go with plain or textured fabrics on bot h chairs and sofas, I can do some more with rug, but still doubt I would be too busy with it. Trying for soft, warm but clean look. This is the kitchen that is open to this room....and what started this redo to begin with!
