Engineered Wood Floor 3mm Wear Layer in Euro White Oak or White Oak?
Comments (27)@Joe Macker. I added protective film to my windows to block UV rays from causing damage. The advantage is that this protects everything in my room. I had damage to my furniture - both cloth and wood from the light streaming in. I have an Eastern exposure. You can't tell that there is any kind of protective film on the windows as mine are not tinted - or tinted so slightly that there is almost no difference but they are rated for close to 99% blocking of the UV rays....See MoreEngineered vs. solid 5" white oak floors/select vs. character
Comments (10)"What do you recommend for installation?" A true rift and quartered solid 5 1/4" only needs to be nailed (I don't like staples) providing you have the relative humidity in check in all areas of the dwelling. No need for gluing. That reference comes from plain sawn (regular) hardwoods. "Not a professional, but much of the "engineered" hate seems to stem from the past." Thanks sprinkles. There are still a good number of 'old schoolers' out there too that only want the real thing. Take your time and understand the differences. Comments (7)Just a little Heads up. Brazilian Oak is called Tauri. It is an 'exotic' hardwood (it comes from somewhere other than your continent). Like MOST exotic hardwoods it is photosensitive. That is to say it GETS DARKER as it ages. This has NOTHING to do with the finish. It has everything to do with the WOOD. The pretty, soft, velvety browns and smooth beige you are seeing WILL NOT last. Nope. They get darker and STRONGER in colour. Yah. Even though they are ranked as 'low' on the photosensitivity radar...they will still get a snick darker as soon as they are exposed to 'light'. The white oak is not something that has this issue. In fact it can fade in a medium amount of time in direct sunlight (with old windows with very little UV block on them). And the STAIRS are going to be a NIGHTMARE with Tauri. The amount of effort put into 'matching' the colouring with another species can double your flooring budget. Nope. Not kidding. And just so you know...there are PLENTY OF COMPAINTS about Shaw wood flooring products. I would suggest you go ahead and search this website to see what people are complaining about. Some of the treads are old...and some are very new (like 1-2 weeks old?) which tells me Shaw is NOT pulling up it's socks on this issue....See MoreWhite oak flooring - rift/quarter-sawn vs. live sawn - advice needed!
Comments (8)Here's info on an engineered option. Engineered gets you a stable plank up to 12 inches wide. And at least 7 inches wide. Wider shows off more of the structure of the wood with character when you choose flat cut. Of course, that doesn't work well with the open grain of North American white oak quercus alba. An alternative is French or European Oak, quercus robur. That species doesn't have grain as open as NA white oak. Lots of flooring sources including Monarch Plank. Link. Unfinished rustic French Oak.
