Very long Pothos vine propogation

I'm in charge of taking care of all the plants at my work we have a pothos plant that has two extremely long vines, at least 10 feet each. I was wondering if I could cut off a large section of a vine, and cut it into multiple starts, or get the one long section of vine to grow fines from multiple nodes? I'm not sure that that makes sense, but any advice would be appreciated! It needs a good cutting back and I want to make the most of the vines as I can.

Jade, it's best if you cut the long vines into multiple segments. Just be sure you keep track of which is the root end and which is the top.

You can get a nice little pot if you stick three 6" cuttings together in the same small container.

They are very easy to grow from cuttings, just make sure you have at least one leaf node on each section. You'll get a lot of plants out of it.

i once grew pothos up and along the pergola like structure. indoors in a room with east/west exposure: sunroom with very large windows..practically 2 adjacent walls. it climbed up about 4 ' and then along the beams - for about 8' towards the southern window. it was very healthy, i did not repot for 4-5 years (it would be impossible with vines jumbled all over in the air and pots at 5' high on the ledge). the vines were getting longer and longer with healthy variegated leaves (that did not get bigger, just reg. size). so the length of vines was close to 12'? when they out grew the beams, i'd cut them down by half may be. but they did loose leaves on the bottom slowly. so the bottom 3-4' on each vine were bare. i've seen them outdoors climbing on trees - they also loose bottom leaves as they get very long.

Sorry, I know nothing about using pictures from phones on here without putting them on computer first. If your other plant only grew 2 leaves this summer, then yes, the plants really could use more light if possible. There are many discussions about Pothos on the house plant forum also. Look also for the term Epipremnum, the botanical name, when searching for info. Occasionally heart-leaf Philodendron will be referred to as Pothos, but either appreciate the same cultural conditions. Ask yourself (and/or the owner of the plant) what is different from the conditions of the plant from which you took your recent cutting.

It does look pretty far gone. New roots and growth shoots come from the leaf nodes, that's where to look for any signs of new life. The soil needs to be fast draining and not prone to being soggy. But it will need to have humid air around it to encourage roots. You can put it in a plastic bag and keep it in a warm (not actually hot) spot. I find with cuttings of these if you keep them in plastic and wash daily you don't get problems with fungus or rotting. Of course if it's too far gone then you won't get any growth.

Hey so I ran across something very crazy with a Pothos has any of you guys tried making a post those and propagating it directly from a huge vine that it is almost like a tree? can someone explain what you mean by nodes and internodes are? in have the exact same issue with my 2 ok this. one is a golden type and the other is the larger leafed green kind.

I'm actually sort of confused about what nodes and internodes are, if you could explain it to me that would be great!

Nodes are the area of the stem where the leaf attaches, that's where roots come from and also new growths/shoots.

The internodes are the sections of stem between the nodes. This area doesn't produce roots or new shoots. That's why it's important to have nodes with cuttings, otherwise there's no growth.

How many nodes do you typically want per cutting?

How many of the nodes should you remove the leaves from?

If I'm making multiple cuttings from one vine, do I need to be concerned about where the "top" of the cutting it cut? Or will both ends grow roots?

Do you cut at the node or just below it?

People have their own ideas on how many nodes should be on a cutting, but definitely at least one. The stem stores nutrients and energy which will be used by the new shoot. The more stem you have the more nutrients, etc., there'll be for the new growth. I tend to cut stems about half way between nodes.

You can place cuttings in a plastic bag. Just open it up and wash the plants regularly. That changes the air and water around the cuttings and helps prevent fungus/mould getting established. When there's roots you can plant them in soil. You can also lay the cuttings on soil in a pot and place the lot in a plastic bag. Roots will go from the nodes into the soil and then the bag can be removed. Otherwise plant them vertically in the soil with one node at soil level. Plastic bag can be used for that as well but you need to let air circulate inside so you don't get fungus or mould growing. There's a number of ways you can go with.
