Focal Point for Round Bed in 8a Antique Garden

What would you suggest to provide year-round interest in the center of a formal rose garden. Our extension agent suggested Bears Breeches (acanthus mollis) but not sure it carries out the antique look. The garden is next to an early 18th century farmhouse.

The garden is shady and over the years, roses have become fewer and shade-loving perennials more. Due to the needs of ferns, farfugia, foxgloves etc. we keep it moist.

The center bed gets a couple hours of afternoon sun (3 at most, I'd say) and is easily 112 feet in diameter. We are in SE Virginia at the very edge of 8A so we do see some zone 7 type freezes.
