My grafted, growing-over-the-septic-tank Louis Philipe was as large and full as any large tea rose. In fact, it was fuller than my Mrs. B R Cant. I have never seen another LP grow like as well as that particular LP though. Anyway I chop my LP back to keep it a fuller, but small bush. I think good care--lots of water, mulch, organics, fertilizer and keeping on top of sider mites will assist you a lot.

My grandmother, in North Florida, grew LP in with some azaleas. This seemed to disguise it's angular growth. That approach works too.

Well, to me he's a focal point, and mine is only 2 1/2 months old. I just read another post of yours, and LP is the one in my garden that I always want to stop and look at. I love his pink and red flowers. He's still little, but I think he'll be gorgeous.

Louis Philippe is a great accent rose. I like the shape, but I do prune him every few weeks too. He's not particular. I have used the hedge saw on him.

I grow so weary of seeing Knock Out as the stable rose everywhere. I think Louis had a much better bloom, color and is much healthier than Knock Out. I think it also says "antique garden" or "old garden" much better. It does get big though, but it is easy to keep to a manageable size.

So, garden party, you think I should wait til next year to shape him? I've only been deadheading. I love yours. He's nice and dense. LP is easy to grow from cuttings, isn't he?

He's on the west side of my house so he is shaded until noonish, it may be a little earlier than that. Then he's in full sun until dark. Sound O.K.?

Darn, I wish my LP looked like the ones in the photos in this thread. My LP is healthy and all but the small almost single petalled flowers are not all that exciting...(I purchased mine from Chamblee's). :-(

Sandy, I got mine at a small nursery in Sparr just north of Ocala. I was a total newbie in February, and I kinda remembered that it was a China, but had no clue it was going to be such a nice rose. I should have bought 2! Now she probably doesn't have anymore since she was getting rid of everything but Knock Outs. I really love it. I was just on Seminole Springs' site today. She has some.

That looks exactly like my Cramoisi :-). I love that rose. It will really be pretty against your white house.

Thanks Sherrycola. Seminole Springs is a wonderful place to get roses. In fact, that is where I got this one. I was just curipous because there seems to be some different versions of Louis out there. What nursery is the one only carrying Knockouts? Is it Taylor Gardens? That is where I got my three Double Knockouts. She had told me the old garden roses didn't sell well, which really surprised me.

Carol, they sure can look alike! It sounds like some of the differences may show up at maturity, but my Cramoisi looks a lot like my Louis also.

What tea roses do you think would look nice next to him? Any suggestions?

Yes, Taylor Gardens. I think I bought 6 roses from her that day, one being ZD which had no label and she couldn't remember what it was. I only knew I loved the smell. I finally planted it last weekend. It's doing well so far. I also got Bermuda Spice, Tiffany on fort, Belinda's Dream on fort (was totally thrilled with that purchase!) and White Meideland. They're all doing well. Spice is quite large, just finishing up a big flush. Well, it sure would be nice to have OGRs for sale that close by. Where are you located that you would make the drive to Sparr?

Peggy, our friends in East Texas have a Louis Philippe that sounds like the description of yours. It's small blooms are almost single, and not very shapely. It looks nothing like my Cramoisi did.

If, when I return to Florida, my LP has bit the dust I'll replace it with one from Seminole Springs. But I suppose because I'm not all that in love with it, it will be the ONLY one that is still alive when we return in early August! LOL!

I'm so excited! I stopped by a local nursery today , and he had 4 OGRs!! I was amazed! And one was a really big and pretty Louis Philippe. So I bought it. I'll put him in my front yard when I dig out the St. Augustine grass for the new rose bed in a couple of months!

Hi Sherrycola, I live in Ocala, so Taylor Gardens is not all that far from me. If I can remember (which I probably won't-should have written it down) backroads it takes about 30 minutes to get there. If I have to go over to Pine (which is 441) it takes me about 45 minutes with all the traffic.

I'm jealous that you got a Belinda's Dream on fortuniana!

Sandy, just today I saw a Louis Philippe on a commercial property near downtown. I couldn't believe it! It had to be 6 ft tall and 3 - 4 ft wide - and blooming! I have to go back tomorrow and take pictures.
