Hey Mike, I just got a Logee's catalog..To be honest, I've never heard of Acokanthera. I thought your new plant was Sweet Olive.. Where have I been? Preparing for Christmas. I baked several pounds of cookies and bars for family/friends, 'approximately 200' different types. Decorated, bought and wrapped gifts, cleaned, visited, addresed Christmas cards, blah blah..In the meantime, I've pretty much neglected plants which I explained in another thread. Regretting it now. Lol, on the darts..I feel the same..lol.. Mike, truthfully..I didn't know about the darts..I researched your plant, then came across information about the dart and sap. I have two perrenial bushes in the garden called Winter Sweet and Winter Shrub..at first I wondered if this bush was the same plant as yours, but since Acokanthera is a native of Africa, it'd never surive here, not outdoors, anyways. Did you say the owner gave you his plant??? Did he supply care instructions? For instance, when and what to fertilize, light, soil, watering, etc? It's a very very pretty plant, and fragrant, too!! Wonder why it can't be propagated from cuttings.. I'd try as an experiment..lol..Wonder if it's fast or slow-growing?? Hope it's not too much work keeping it alive, especially in winter. Hey Biker, Thanks but no apology needed, no harm, no foul, etc. Sometimes we're more clear than others, sometimes not. I have many times misread something ('cause I'm going too fast), or posting on a quick break at work, or way too late at night at home, etc. Well Mike, It's just that I used to word process for a living so I find my own bad proofing is particularly cringe-worthy. But then, as professionals (at law firms) one rarely proofs one's own work for exactly that reason. One tends to see what one wants on the page rather than what's actually there. That's why it's best (professionally) to only proof work one did not create. Glad you understood the caution about the Euphorbia sap. One needs to wash carefully after handling & pay particular attention to avoid the face & all mucous membranes until after thorough washing. It tends to be more relevant on things like E. trigona, lactea, & those types. Mike, what you said about being given cuttings you've never seen before at the nursery. I'll try to say this gently, but just cause you haven't seen a plant before, does't mean it's rare, it's just new to you. The plant world out there is so GIGANTIC, there's oodles to see. Once I started collecting succulents & seeing more than a few, I thought I was getting to see a lot of them. Then I started visiting a friend in San Diego & he showed me plants in person that were just amazing at parks & in special places he knew including their zoo. Turns out the San Diego Zoo w/ its famous collection of animals (made famous on Johnny Carson Show w/ the Zookeeper Joan Embry) has a botanical collection even more valuable than its animal collection; who knew. Go there in Feb. & one can see fields of Aloes blooming around certain animal areas, pretty cool.

In 2010 I got seeds from several trees transplanted to a park in 1935 and they were not so tall like those in the pictures. My seedlings started to produce cones this year, but they are less than two feet tall. It seems they will take decades to reach their parent trees

Mike, That is a variety of Daphne. There are about 500 kinds of Daphnes, but it looks to me that you have the evergreen winter blooming one. Leave it in the water even if all the leaves fall off. It will root, might take a while, but it is worth the wait. Good Luck! Happy New Year to you too!
