Black ants on my Magnolia tree

I recently purchased a Magnolia tree and am waiting for early fall to plant it. I noticed there were lot of black/garden ants on the tree along with what seemed like nests (pictures posted). The web research I have done on this provides conflicting information. Some sites mention that the ants are not harming the tree but other mention that the tree will die if the ants infestation is not removed from the tree.

I am looking for advice on whether (1) I should leave the ants alone or I should deal with the infestation (2) If I have to remove them what should I use?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions and help
