What do you have/ plant under dwarf-ish (fruit) apple-trees

Hi there,

I have 2 small alottments with about 5 small fruit trees, all with rather dwarfing root stocks.

Would it be okay to underplant them with low growing perennials like Ladys Mantle (use them for cut flowers) or is it best for the trees to keep the soil just covered/ mulched/ weeded?

Similar with my Kiwi arguta plants on a sturdy trelly/ frame (2 femailes, 1 male).

I spaced them about 11feet apart, on a 4feet wide strip.

The spacing was recommended to give their root enough space, not have too much competition.

The plants are babys, would it be ok, if I plant some perennials in between or is it too much competion?

Right now I grow some green manure on the otherwise bare strip, in order to improve the soil, just not near them.

Thanks for your thoughts, bye, Lin
