Fuji apples tree leaves turning yellow/brown.

I planted a few apple trees and a peach tree in the last year. The Fuji apples tree was planted about 3 months ago, has looked very healthy and has put on several inches since planting. In the last week or so, at least 1/2 of the leaves have turned yellow and will fall off readily. We have gotten pretty heavy rainfall in SE Georgia in the last month and have had rather hot days as well (95F+) at times as well.

Up until the last week, it has been extremely healthy and this was during the time we received the most rainfall. I left town for a few days with a hand full of yellow leaves and now just a few days later, the tree looks awful.

It was doing great with lots of rain and now with heat and less rain it looks bad. As strange as it may seem it's probably just dry. That's what it looks like, at least to some degree.

I'd assume a tree that size was potted when planted. It probably doesn't have many new roots in new soil. That means until it does you need to rewet that rootball often. If the roots weren't spread out it's even worse. Try soaking the rootball every other day or even more often if your soil drains well. Keep the weeds down and soak the surrounding grass once in a while.

I have an irrigation system and it is watered every other day. With the rain, it's getting rain pretty much daily. I spread out the roots all around with a little buried a little to try to emulate established roots that went out as far as the canopy. I put down a time release fertilizer that was supposed to good for fruiting trees (can't remember what kind) shortly after planting. I just don't get it.

I know its been very hot temperature-wise, but it hasn't been too dry. I haven't let it go more than 3-4 days if we haven't gotten regular rain to bring the hose over and throw a few gallons more water as I read the young trees need a lot to get established. I appreciate the reply. I'll keep up the watering as of now. It just looks like the trees stressed. The only thing I had an issue with until now was some aphids that I cured with a spray bottle w/soap occasionally. I noticed the leaf tips we're turning in. This most recent issue has come on *quick*. The other 3 trees look fine, one of which is a bit smaller Fuji as well and is probably w/in 20 yards, though it gets a bit if shade.

Anna's will go dormant but still have some leaves left on. If it is an Anna. Phoenix has had some very low night temps in the last couple of weeks and I agree with avid that it is going dormant. I am much colder (snow) and some of my apple trees still have some leaves. The rest of the orchard is leafless. I would not worry. If you receive no rain in the next couple of weeks then you may need to water a LITTLE. Even though it is dormant it needs a little water. Just FYI never have a landscaper pick out your fruit trees, plant them or trim them. Bad idea. Jennifer —-(Spraying with Neem Oil and or and other mixtures to eradicate the insects organically could still harm those beneficial insects. Some people will just let those pest stay on the tree because they dont want to harm them. Its a difficlt choice to make for some and you need to understand that some bad infestations that might get out of hand and could cause your trees to become weak and allow other diseses to slowly kill your tree. i always try and let Mother Nature work on the right balance of the pest verses the beneficial insets to keep everything in check. Was your tree in pot when you bought it? Potted trees often are root bound and hold tightly to the medium they were planted in. Did you spread out the roots before you planted. That could be why the roots cannot fully function. Like others say, over or under watering could kill a tree. I feel that your issue is the roots not functioning properly.

Too much fertilizer could have that effect. Not much you can do about that now except don't fertilize again until the tree has recovered. It doesn't look like it's ready to die. Make it thru the next 2-3 months and it should look much better next yr.

Fertilizer was put down around 2 months ago... I don't know know. I'll just wait it out and see.
