10’ ceilings 7’ or 8’ interior doors?
Comments (15)Another vote for 8' doors. My DH and I are very tall and boy, do I appreciate the extra height of an 8' door vs a 6'8" door. All of our other openings (without doors) are 8' also, with the exception of two. The passageway to our master bedroom and directly across the hallway to the laundry room is another opening where it's about 7'5". They were spec'd to be 8' tall, like all the others but due to a framing error around the staircase an 8' opening would have been too tall. We had to make a decision quickly....rip out the staircase (for the 2nd time) and change some 2nd floor framing or drop those two headers 6" (actually only 1 was needed but we both were needed for symmetry). Does it look funny next to 8' openings? Nope. I don't even notice it....See More9 foot ceilings, 7 foot doors, 6 foot windows. I NEED PICTURES! HELP
Comments (7)Martina Collom Design oh that’s such a relief! Would you mind posting a photo of your home from the inside? I started second guessing it all this morning! I can’t decide if I want to do 6’ windows or 5.75’ windows! So many decisions. We are planning for all of our doors to be 7’, that’s why I might be leaning towards the 5.75’ doors. Because if we do 6’ windows and 7’ doors, our windows are only 1’ off the ground. I think that it may look a little funky. Idk. I’m not too worried about the added cost of safety glass. We are building a small house and so it only adds about $400 to the overall build cost....See MorePhotos or thoughts on 7ft doors near 8ft doors?
Comments (10)I was the architect on a project that someone else designed, I oversaw the design and production of the construction documents. The designer caled for an seven foot high doorway to the kitchen, next to a window with an eight foot high header height, next to a door with an seven foot high header height, next to a window with an eight foot high header height, next to a door-wall with an eight foot high header height, next to a window with an eight foot high header height, next to a window with an ten foot high header height. There were many factors involved that in theory would make it work, and in reality it did work very well....See MoreDoor Height 6’8”, 7” or 8”?
Comments (8)Do you have crown? 8 foot doors on a 9 foot ceiling can have issues with door casing and crown molding. Obviously they need to add up to less than 12 inches but even 10 inches can look crammed. Interior door costs are not bad but exterior ones add up. Exterior doors also don't need to match size with interior - IMO. But that depends on design/style etc. 7 foot doors are a little frustrating because (for us) they cost basically what 8 foot doors did for only 4 extra inches. In my area (and style), 7 foot is less common so more expensive for what you get. It is fair to say that 8 foot doors can have more practical issues than smaller doors. Warpage, alignment etc....See Moremillworkman
