How can i get my hens to lay inn the same area?? And other Stuff.
Comments (2)I'll take one of your questions. Do you have nest boxes in a coop? The way a lot of folks (myself included,) have "trained" chickens is to keep them confined to the coop until they are used to laying in the nest box. The chickens will naturally seek a quiet, private area, usually out of direct sunlight to lay eggs if available. Your nest boxes should should offer these amenities. Once the birds are used to laying in the nests, they will usually return to the coop during their daily outings to lay. How old are these hens. Getting them used to the nest boxes is easier when they are first starting to lay. If they have been laying all over the yard for a while, breaking them of bad habits may be more difficult. I'd start by confining them to quarters for a while. Put an egg or two (or even golf balls) in the nests to give them an idea of what the nests are for. Wayne...See MoreHow many jugs do you sow? Comments (10)I keep a list of the seed varieties I'm planning to WS and then estimate the # of containers/jugs of each seed type I think I'll WS. For example, I know after seeing the hummingbird more often this year I want to go heavy on Lobelia cardinalis/cardinal flower. I traded for seed to supplement what I harvested from my WS plants and have enough to WS 6-10 milk jugs. I've still got plenty of room to plant out lots more LC in a few beds so I'll go heavy with those. Last year I WS ten jugs of blackberry lily so I don't need to do those this year. I'll only do 1-2 jugs of Verbascum/mullein because the ones I WS last year will bloom in 2012. I've gotten very low germination from columbine the past two WS seasons and will sow those extra heavy this year. Apple & pear germinated 100% as did dogwood. I have more seeds and will WS them this year since I lost two mature dogwood trees to the October snowstorm. I'll WS as many jugs as I have turtlehead seeds. They were a hit with the bumblebees. I keep WS until I look at my pot ghetto and decide, "That's enough."...See MoreHow many pets do you have? How many is 'too many'?
Comments (102)i lost my senior great dane girl 5 weeks ago to bone cancer. it was sudden and shocking and i still look for her. my remaining dane girl and eden were joined at the hip, pip took the loss very hard and had been grieving so much, it broke my heart. i contacted pip's breeder and one of her former co-owners and asked that they keep an eye out for any adults that any breeder friends might be considering a new home for (retired show dogs, etc.). the co-owner gave me the contact information for one of her people who had a dane boy she had been looking for just the right home for and the rest is history. meet "flighty foto my way", call name "frank". frank will be 4 years old on 5/31. he is a very sweet boy and he and pippin hit it off immediately at our meet 'n' greet friday. they do zoomies numerous times a day, sleep curled up together and are just a perfect pair. pippin is so much happier and that makes me happier. even though i miss eden terribly, i am beginning to heal now that pip is feeling better. frank is a bit on the thin side because he lived the last 4 weeks with a female dane who was going through a heat cycle and when that's going on, intact males ignore food, do a lot of pacing and fretting and routinely lose weight. he's eating like a horse so i'm confident he will gain and be back to his normal weight soon. i'm giving him a few weeks to settle in and then i'll make an appointment to have him neutered....See MoreHow Many Do it The Old Fashioned Way?
Comments (30)When I am in a hurry, or want a TV snack, I use a bag of microwave popcorn - Benfit: no clean up. But, if I want the good stuff, or am popping for more than one person, I'll do a batch on the gas stove. I use a deep pot with lid on a gas burner. Use corn oil (or hacon grease if available). Preheat the oil. Starting from near cold, throw in 3 kernels of corn, cover with the lid, heat until the first kernal pops; The kettle is ready. Toss in the corn with no more than just enough to cover the botyom of the pan with one layer of kernels. place the lid. Occasionally shake the pot to keep from burning the corn on one side. When Popping starts, increase vigor of shaking. When popping is almost done or is done, remove pan and dump contents into a large paper bag. Quickly pour in oil and 3 test kernels and repeat. Add salt and seasoning to the bag as desired and shake. Melted butter/oleo can be added or left out for healthier fare. Advantages: Lowest cost, best tasting, control of ingredients such as oil, salt, and seasoning. Disadvantage: Clean up and tendancy to consume more. Its too good and plentiful....See More- 9 years ago
