Orthotic friendly sandals.... are these horrible?

I've recently been learning more that I ever wanted to know about my right foot and inner ankle. It's been bothering me on and off, increasingly more 'on' - especially if I was walking a lot, etc., since late last summer. I mentioned it casually to my doctor once or twice but never really thought a lot about it. After a trip to Las Vegas in February, where we were on the go A LOT (at the end of a couple of long days of walking I thought I might have to crawl on my hands and knees back to the hotel - I totally overdid it), I came home with a foot so swollen I couldn't zipper my boots.

Since that time I've been for x-rays and a bone scan and to see a foot specialist. It seems my problem is two-fold. First, from the bone scan I learned that I have "os naviculare", which basically means I have an extra bony prominence on the inside of my foot (sort of above the arch but below the ankle) either from birth, or due to the bones developing abnormally as I grew. That was interesting... but, still, why is it bothering me now? Apparently between 2 - 15% of the population are affected and usually it's asymptomatic. Most people don't ever even realize they have it - unless there is an aggravating injury.

On to the foot specialist, and he now thinks I have torn or stretched the tendon that aligns that area of my foot. Because the tendon is no longer holding everything where it should be, my arch is 'compressing' more with each step causing my foot to roll somewhat to the inside - and thus putting pressure on my previously unknown os naviculare. It's also starting to affect my knee and hip.

So far, as a first step, he is confident that by wearing orthotics to support my arch and stabilize my foot (and relieve the pain), the tendon will heal. Therefore, I am now on the hunt for orthotic friendly shoes. I've bought a really good pair of sneakers which will probably be my primary shoe for awhile, especially for walking the dog, getting groceries, etc. The good news is that he doesn't think I'll need to wear them all the time, at work especially, provided I wear shoes with really solid arch support. No more flipflops. And I have to wear the orthotics anytime I will be on my feet or walking for any length of time. I am going to make every effort to wear them as much as I possibly can.

I don't think finding shoes will be too much problem. But I've been on a quest to find a pair of nice orthotic friendly sandals. We're going to Maine on vacation the first of August and we'll probably be fairly busy - some shopping, wandering around town.... I just don't want to have to wear sneakers all the time, all summer. :(

What do you think of these? I keep going back and forth. I'm in my early 40s and I don't want sandals that scream Orthotics! but I also know I have to look after my foot. Would you wear these?

Do any of you have any other suggestions??
