Fieldstone foundation--how to plug big gaps?
Comments (11)Thanks for the page of links! Now I know what to Google. I'd been unfamiliar with the term "rubblestone." I'll check out those links. There's no sign of the foundation changing in the past 40 years--no changes in the way doors close or other differences in the 1st and 2nd floors with its post-and-beam construction. It's reasonably water-tight (some water has always leaked in at the base of one corner; it follows a trench to a sandy spot where it sinks away). I'm not so much trying to "fix" our cellar's foundation walls as to plug up air leaks and make it a bit more challenging for rodents to get in. Basically we hope to patch it up more or less the way the previous generations did. We just heard from the guys who haul in our firewood each fall--suddenly our cellar work has to be done within the next 5 days due to their schedule. Looks like we'll be stuffing fiberglass into the cracks again. I did note in some article links (just started reading them) that there's a danger in repairing only from the inside--I can see there's more to this than I'd imagined. Sadly, we can't afford a major (or minor) engineering project. The house needs to stay intact about 15-20 years (our maximum expected lifespan), which I think it will do. Thanks again!...See MoreWhat do you have in your built in bookcases???
Comments (40)Chelone's post inspired me to share something: we have almost no books in our house. (awaiting the gasps of horror!!) We recently donated most of what we will not read or use again to our local library. We make weekly trips to the library and are very well read, but you wouldn't necessarily know it to look at our house LOL. I was tired of dusting, storing, and caring for something that really could be enjoyed by other people. We also donated most of our DVDs. It was very liberating and freed up a lot of storage space for us. Now I have a small collection of cookbooks in the dining room, some computer language reference books in the office, and just one or two beloved fiction anthologies in the bedroom. Not a solution for everyone, but it really helped reduce the clutter in our house. It also saves a lot of money on purchases that may only be used/read once or twice. My shelves are only about 25% books, and 75% storage (baskets and boxes storing our camera, computer cords, greeting cards, sheet music, extra reeds, decorative dishes, and photos.)...See MoreBig ol' bookcase: IKEA Liatorp?
Comments (35)Thank you all for the helpful input! I'm still mulling it all over. I'll think about it and look around, and then put it on the backburner - then start the thinking process all over again. Just not sure WHAT we want to do, and I'm not even sure if I will be happiest with floor-to-ceiling bookcases, or counter-height bookcases running along one wall. I still love the collected look of Jane Fonda's gallery library too ... Although when I showed DH three oak bookcases that were going together on our CL recently (one in the middle taller than the two on either side, which were barrister style - would have lent itself to the Jane Fonda look, I think), he quipped, "What are you gonna do? Open a cigar store?" So clearly he has a different take on slightly mismatched cabinetry than I do. We've nixed the CL bookcases as we aren't sure we could easily get them up the staircase and then do the turn on the landing to get into the reading room. Having to hire movers adds a whole new problematic aspect to purchasing a large CL unit too. Building them in the room would certainly be preferable, so I'm going to keep thinking about how to do this. And trying to figure out exactly what I want in the room!...See Morepulled up carpet to expose the hardwood--big gaps
Comments (5)one solution i was going to suggest was if it wasnt too many boards that had large gaps, was to install some very short pieces of floor to bridge that gap, which is still an option, just a matter of time and patience on your end. building out the base and shoe mouldings will achieve the same result....See MoreJKH
