Winter weather, summer bugs?
Comments (1)I don't know about rose pests but I know the year we had no winter they said the mosquitos would be really bad because there was no die off...and they were!...See MoreOutdoor summer cactus/succulents... indoors in cold weather
Comments (8)I am further south than all that have spoken so far so I might not be on topic at all. It got down to 36 last night. That was a surprise so today I started moving some of my pots. Our lows will be bouncing around upper 40's and 50's for the next week. But I move most of my Aloes and cactuses down to a covered stone patio that faces south. The low sun heats it up good during the day and the thick cement columns hold a lot of thermal mass. The slightly cold hardy aloes and cactus love it down there. They get great winter colors and if I get a freak cold front , they are not far from the door to my woodshop. I separate my cactus between who is a tropical cactus (inside now), who takes cold but no damp. who is Zone 9, I will move some in and out for cold fronts, some get indoor perches for the whole winter. Some get covered over outside. It is a mixture of treatments. Now they are just getting moved close to where they are going. God there are a lot of them. Many are cold hardy and don't move at all unless it starts poring rain for many cold days and then I haul them under a overhang.....See MoreSuddenly, it's summer---How's your weather?
Comments (21)Drought tends to feed on itself. So..., once an area gets into drought, it tends to persist, grow in extent and worsen. (That part is normal enough.) It will take a MAJOR pattern change to alter what has been occurring in the West for a last few years now. Meteorologists have coined the phrase the 'Ridiculously Resilient Ridge' to describe the abnormally persistent heat dome in the West. As the West has experienced this, the Midwest and Northeast have been cooler and wetter than normal (seen most clearly the last two winters which were both brutally cold in theses regions, and offered record snows to many). We are still stuck in the same weather pattern and the beat goes on......See MoreLarch wood for exterior window shutters in warm summer weather?
Comments (0)HI, I'd like to make exterior window shutters for a house in a mountainous part of north Spain where summer temperatures can reach around 28C - 30 C. In general, would there be any problems using Siberian larch wood in locations with very warm summers? Because I heard something about larch not being a good choice for shutters due to a high resin content, and I'm wondering whether this may be due to the effect of the sun and warm temperatures? The other option would be thermal treated pine wood, which is cheaper but do you think the larch would be better, last longer and require less maintenance? Thanks...See Morebengz6westmd
