Moissanite vs. Diamond Rings?
Comments (15)28 years ago my wife's diamond ring was stolen. We had no insurance because when we had closed on our first home our insurance man told us that adding in the ring on our home insurance policy would hold up things for the closing. The ring was appraised at $3,500.00 and the diamond was .91ct with an I color and VS1 inclusion. To buy the diamond today on the wholesale internet diamond dealers would probably cost about 4,000.00. I wanted to buy my wife a diamond ring again but the more I learned about diamonds and the De Beers cartel the more turned off I became on diamonds. De Beers monopolizes about 75% of the worlds diamonds. The are responsible for diamonds high prices. Through limiting distribution and advertising they have brainwashed people and gotten jewelers into accepting the high prices. Moissanites are very tough and beautiful stone. If they are ever produced in cubic form there will be no way to distinguish the difference between diamonds and moissanites. Most moissanite stones are not cut as well as many diamonds. Moissanites have only very good cuts while diamonds can have excellent and even better cuts. I bought my wife a moissanite 6mm brilliant round stone and I explained all I know about moissanite and she loved the stone. She doesn't lie but tells her friends what kind of stone it is. We explain it's knickname, the "meteorite diamond" and that the man that discovered it thought they were diamonds on the meteorite that he had found. The color of most moissanite is I-J slightly yellow. But diamonds are often I-J too. The best thing about the moissanite is I don't have waste thousands of dollars on a piece of crystal that we really don't need and I don't have to buy insurance and waste a couple hundred more dollars a year. Also if we ever had to sell it we would not be out a couple thousand dollars. By the way I mounted the stone myself on a 14kt solitaire ring mounting. I am now for our anniversary mounting a 7x7mm square on a 14kt mounting with a 20" 14kt gold chain to give her. The stone cost $599.00 instead of a diamond at $15,000. It will look just as beautiful and I won't worry if it is lost or stolen. My will love the moissanite pendant because SHE IS PRACTICAL and not prejudiced by diamonds....See MoreShould both husband and wife wear rings?
Comments (29)I agree with you, justcallmeb. I've never really like jewerly. I sometimes wear earrings to help flatter my face, but other than that most jewerly bothers me. And, diamonds seem just so absolutely materialistic, IMHO. I have a nice ring, but I hardly ever wear it. There's a commercial out now with a middle age couple driving in a car with a beautiful love song playing in the background.. the husband reaches over and hold's his wife's hand giving her a diamond necklace.. It just about makes me sick. Yeah, those diamonds prove that your guy likes you.. too bad he gave the matching diamond earrings to his secretary earlier that day. Maybe I'm just not romantic or my romance includes something totally different. Way to ruin a beautiful song (Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop by Landon Pigg). Comments (25)My DH was never married to BM so no engagement/wedding rings were around. I do remember YEARS ago (probably 6+) I was in DH's office at work and opened a drawer and there was some jewelry---rings, braclets, necklaces. When he and BM had broken up, she'd stuffed everything he'd ever given her into a box and given it all back. There was a beautiful diamond and tanzanite ring, and some diamond studs----several other nice pieces. I wasn't necessarily *bothered* by it but it did make me feel weird. Not sure why. I have to admit, when I've seen pictures of DH with BM and SS as a baby, it makes me feel weird, too. I think it's a) partly because DH was so young (19-25) in the years he was with BM and it's odd for me to see him that way and b) BM is just so awful/cruel/vindictive now that it's tough for me to imagine him actually BEING with her. Fortunately, since they split when SS was 10 months, HE doesn't have any memories of them together. So there aren't pics in his room or anything of his parents together. All the old pictures DH has are in boxes and filing cabinets in our garage, and some are in a photo album, but most of those are of DH alone with SS---in the years after he and BM broke up. Rambling....anyway, at one point, DH asked me if I wanted any of the jewelry. I think the death stare I gave him said it all! I assume he sold the jewelry or something because I've never seen it since and I've never asked. I really don't care. I wasn't married to DD's father, either, nor was I engaged. My ring now was purchased by DH for me---not a family heirloom or anything. If we were to ever divorce, I assume I would keep it, not sure what I'd do with it. I could see hanging onto it and giving it to DD or maybe having the diamonds removed and made into a bracelet for her or something. I don't think it would be weird for your DH to give his old wedding band to his son--like someone else said, his son IS a product of that marriage. I don't think his son would see it as his dad holding onto old romantic feelings or anything. JMO....See MoreAnyone know about diamond rings?
Comments (34)Hi daisy! I’m a jeweler- my family hand makes and designs everything we sell. We do A LOT of custom resets just like yours. A few things: A bezel setting is super secure and very easy to wear, it doesn’t catch! When done properly, I.e. trimmed back, it does not affect the performance of the diamond. A stock setting, like the first you posted, will generally be the most affordable option over a truly custom piece, but it has to be available for the diamonds you have. White flash is a very reputable company that will customize that design for your exact stones, but not every jeweler is capable of customizing a stock setting or doing it particularly well. whether you go with a stock setting or a custom setting, ask for details and look for a company that will be able to show you a CAD rendering or a 3D wax model (or the components of your stock setting) before it’s in metal and set. Too many people come to us because what they received as a finished product wasn’t anything like what they envisioned, but there were no intermediate steps for them to approve along the way. There are literally thousand of designs or ways to set three stones, a good designer will be able to take a collection of photos you bring them and pick out the common elements and themes to design you something you will love and that works for your stones. Resetting the diamonds is such a lovely way to remember family members and enjoy them yourself! If you have any questions about the process or specific metals or anything I’m happy to help!...See Morechisue
