Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Split personality exterior. Have to replace siding. HELP!

We just bought on our new home a couple of weeks ago. I posted pictures while we were waiting to close because I thought I wanted to make some cosmetic changes. However, we just found out that a LOT of the fiber cement siding has water damage and we will need to do a complete tear off and residing. So..main dilemma is the front of the house has live edge siding that is stained brown. We hate to tear it off as it is in good shape and has some character. I'm not sure if there is a way to do the sides and back in a different color/material that doesn't look like an afterthought. But, at the same time I don't really want to side the rest in brown. Additionally, I think that going back with live edge all around may be cost prohibitive at this time. Thoughts? Suggestions? Help!?!?!? I am lost and clueless.

I would love suggestions on garage door and trim color, as well. (I plan on replacing the front door, too)

I am open to re-staining the front siding. I just don't know how to go about that with such a dark existing color.

There is nothing you can do about a transparent or semi-transparent stain. However, a "solid hide" stain will cover the old color. A solid hide stain is like a light bodied paint. One or two coats of a solid hide acrylic stain can change the color of the wood siding, however, you will no longer see the grain of the wood, merely the texture.

IMO the house has too many "embellishments" already which, sadly, weren't properly planned for. Suggest removing all the window pediments, the left side upper windows don't have room for them - thereby making the facade appear more unbalanced than it already is. No to shutters. Experiment to find the best size for wide trim around all windows, in the same color as the frames. This will add the right amount of "color contrast" (something which was attempted by adding the shutters). Yes to better and more foundation plantings. PS I noticed the mismatched "boards" of siding right away, sorry you didn't catch it while under warranty.

Hi Rosaura, My first recommendation would be for any design to remove a slanted roofing as it would be difficult to compliment the rest of your roof. With the housing being timber I think either a laminate material or a timber, as in the image below, design would work best. The modern aspects I like about the photo are the hardwood battens on the right hand side, finish on the overhang, and the timber underside with lighting of the roofing. Possibly out of budget, to further 'modernize' it you could stain the pathway to look timber and add a glass wall on the right hand side of the entrance path with plants resting against it. Just remove the shutters and see how that looks. I don't think painting windows with black is going to enhance the house--just adds another element and you do have a brown roof, not black. A much warmer white for the middle would work better with yellow stone and brown roof. Save $$$ for a beautiful landscape design to further beautify the house. But what you have is pretty nice right now. It's important in a newly purchased house to go a year before making landscaping changes so you can see how the plantings look in all seasons. It's great you have quite a few evergreens for year round color--and no leaves to rake!

I think a nice dark gray for siding there is lots of gray in that brick. IMO gutters are not design elements so best when the match the roof or the siding . I think I would do the window trim the same dark gray. Then go to work on the landscaping .

I would probably continue around the house with the same color as the front. Match colors in a house paint for the new HardiPlank can be had for the solid color stain for the front. Solid hide stains can also be matched to other palette colors. A complementary color or tone can be used on the gutters and fascia board to emphasize the horizontal lines and give your house width. A splash of color could be used on the front door.

Paint stores often have palette brochures of exterior colors with suggested color schemes for siding, trim and openings.
