How long should I let collard greens grow?

Erica Fanning

I transplanted some baby collards (originally mistaking them at the store for broccoli- my bad for not reading the labeling well!) last winter-ish. They've produced more than I could eat and I ended up harvesting leaves for co workers towards the end. I've stopped "caring"for them, which pretty much means no bug removal and and no fertilizing. They're on a drip system so they get water with everything else still, and I've collected seeds from the two plants in the back there that have/ had flowers.

My question is- how long should I keep these around? I figured they weren't edible after it got warm (like with lettuce), but I haven't actually tried them. Are they worth keeping still? Do they actually get bitter like lettuce? Or do people only keep them around for seeds and then compost the rest of the plant?

I'm in San Diego, our weather has been in the mid 70s for most of last month with a few days of high 80 to low 90 scattered in there.
