Updating a 90s kitchen
Comments (25)I find the cabinets being very nice looking, but boy that layout would make me re-work the kitchen asap if I had the money. Are the cabinets built as one piece or are they each separate individual cabinets? If individual you can probably move the stove into another spot and re-use the cabinets. You'd likely have to replace at least part of the granite to do this, but it is possible you could work it out without having to do so too. Since we can't see the whole kitchen it is hard to make suggestions that are more specific when it comes to the layout part. I agree with Nelly Bluth that the tones of everything isn't working together. However on my monitor the granite works better with the floor than the wall-color does and the wall color doesn't work well at all with either. Undertones are very tricky to work with and I think you'd need a warmer gray to work with the tile if you decide to keep it. That said on me liking the cabinets. It doesn't matter at all if you don't like them. If you'd be happier to paint them then do so. You are the one living there. We have painted bath cabinets that have never chipped in the last 10 years - no matter how I wish that they would have so I could convince DH to change them out. They were painted with oil paint though I've used latex in other houses and they were fine too, just need to do the proper prep work to avoid any issues....See More90s Honey Oak Kitchen Refresh Help Needed
Comments (5)If your goal is to lighten up the house, avoid adding dark things to the already dark rooms. Add lighting, remove heavy dark window coverings, and check outside to see if there are branches that have grown to block sunlight from the windows. Pruning at the right time of year for your area can let in much needed light again. Start by replacing the light fixtures to improve the overall "dark and brown" look. Remove the over-sink bar cabinets. Paint the walls. Staining the cabinets can't be done well without stripping them, sanding, filling, staining, sanding, and so on. Contact the cabinet company with photos of the damaged areas. Ask them what clear coat can be applied over the existing finish. Chances are good that a clear polyurethane over a bit of stain pen will fix up those worn areas easily....See MoreKitchen with 90s colors baked in
Comments (29)LilDesignWorks thanks for the suggestions! I’m not sure I’m crazy about the black/white combo for a floor covering over our tile, but I’ll play around with it. I’m going to try reorganizing our cabinets so they can fit more and less ends up on top, and hide other things with baskets. The cabinets are actually not “sealed” in the traditional way, they feel like bare wood and we were instructed by the previous owner to use an oil like boiled linseed to maintain them. I’ll definitely start with the walls, window treatments, pulls, lighting, clutter, and floor coverings and see where to go from there. Thanks for the tips on whites too. We have White Dove on our exterior trim and there it reads very slightly yellow or off-white to me. I want to coordinate with the cabinets and floor without making things look more yellow/beige....See MoreDrab 90’s kitchen makeover!
