Trying to grow Basil in San Francisco
Comments (10)Repot and yes, fertilizers can improve flavor and smell. Herbs, by themselves are mostly weeds, but because of all the culturing and breeding they have become more prominent in their characteristics. I use Garden alive fertilize for herbs and its helped to improve taste on dill, rosemary, sage, thyme, and several others. Without it, the plants are somewhat spindly. I never use any chemical fertilizers like Miracle Grow, and prefer organic based fertilizer for all of my garden. Soilless medium isn't a good substitute to continue to grow healthy plants in, as it lacks many of the essential minerals and micronutrients, not to maention regular NPK in a form that plants can absorb. The grocery store herb plants are forced grown in greenhouses, and after a short time they become leggy and really dont have the same quality as those grown from your own seeds, and planted in your own garden. There are many kinds of basil, and also many flavors and smells for the basil family. With store bought plants, you never know anything about the kind of basil it is, which could be something thats not to your taste. I don't buy plants anymore, and start all mine from seeds. That way, I now what I am growing and know what the results will be like. Basil doesn't like a lot of cool weather, but cilantro does....See Morecan I grow basil outdoors where mint is growing??
Comments (3)Unlike mint, Basil grows best in full sun. Why dont you find a sunny spot for it? Probably getting plant would be more suitable for you. Plant them about a foot apart and try planting basil seeds between them. This way your childeren will see how a plant grows from seed. With your basil, let it grow about10 inches then cut from top of each branch roughly 3-4 inches, just about a quarter of inch above where two leaves are accross each other. In a few days two branche will grow above each of those leaves. Again, let those branches grow about 10 inches and repeat the process. Given you have a good growing condition, your basil will have many branches. You dont just pick the leave off of basil. If the seeds that you planted germinate, you have to thin them. lets say only have one or two of them between your previously planted basils. The seed package should give you some guideline. But try to find a sunny spot. Probably cilantro grow better where you have described. I see you are in zone 5. Probably you will have to wait til the end of May?? or after mothers day??to plant basil. You have to know when in your area the danger of frost is over. Basil will not grow if it is cold and a light freez can kill it. But you can plant cilantro , both plant and seeds in your garden, RIGHT NOW, TOMORROW....See Moretaking basil indoors now? Comments (4)I have had no luck keeping basil happy inside. It will not be happy to be dug and brought in. You should try growing in a pot to bring in but most houses do not provide enough light and air movement. Perhaps others who have had basil live for part of the winter can help. As far as Sweet Annie I have been growing one type for about 17 years. To keep it going allow some of your plants to dry naturally and leave in place. Although Sweet Annie is supposed to be an annual you may want to look to see if you have small seedlings coming up in late November. I find that the ones that come up in the fall produce taller plants than the ones that sprout during the spring. A caution with Sweet Annie, I sent a friend to the hospital when I waved a branch close to him. Some people can have very bad problems with it including allergies and asthma attacks....See MoreIndoors insect problem only on basil (so far)
Comments (2)Fungus gnat larvae feed on organic matter and tender plant roots in the potting soil. The adults don't feed on anything. Something else chewed on the leaves and something different has caused the distortion. I'd hesitate to guess who those other guys might be without seeing the plant in person....but you do have fungus gnats (and their little wormy larvae) ....See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
