Comments (3)It is interesting Pooh. Based on your post I downloaded and ran the program. At the moment this is still a BETA program, in other words it is being tested by those of us who elect to use it. Once all the kinks are worked out the final product will be available no doubt. On my computer it searched all 3 hard drive partitions and found 10 insecure programs and 4 end of life. However those tagged as end of life will not be removed, these are old programs I use and will continue to take the small risk they might pose. The live link to the right of each entry takes you to the needed update site for that particular program. It is one more program running in the background. Time wil tell if it stays on my computer but it is an interesting program...See MoreWho Subscribes to Angie's List?
Comments (16)When I moved I found a closer vet who is wonderful, so that's worth the price of the subscription. I've lived in the metro area for a long time so I can say that the rating are generally fairly accurate, as long as you remember that there will always be people who can't be pleased by anyone, and that even good businesses sometimes make mistakes. You also have to look for trends, because reasonable people may differ. For example, my gynecologist is widely recognized as being outstanding. She also happens to be a good fit for my geeky personality. We "get" each other. I could tell that the women who gave her poor ratings (there were only a couple) wanted someone who was better at the warm fuzzies. Some business give discounts to members of Angie's list. For example, I replaced a water heater last week and got $50 off. It was a genuine savings. It's my favorite plumbing company and they quoted a perfectly fair price before I mentioned the Angie's List coupon. I'm not sure that I'm going to renew. In the last year or so, the emphasis seems to have shifted away from consumer ratings to advertising for businesses. I get e-mail from them multiple times per week advertizing "deals". My roofer claims that part of the position of business names in the search results is based on fees that the businesses pay. I have no idea whether or not that's true....See Morequestion for Netflix subscribers
Comments (21)We may want to re-think our whole system before just adding to it. Fewer people -- especially young 'uns -- are buying cable or satelite packages. Today's Chicago Tribune has a Business Section story about a new DVR option from TiVo: The Roamio OTA. It can record 75 hours of high-def programing. You can access over-the-air broadcasts and stream Netflix and YouTube. It is NOT compatible with cable services. TiVo is betting that more people will 'cut the cable (or dish) to use streaming and a HD antenna to access programs. The device is $50, and it's $15/month for service. TiVo pioneered the DVR in 1999. Early models could record OTA (Over The Air). Then they made cable/dish-connected DVRs. Now they are offering this -- for aerial and/or streaming only -- no cable/satelite connections. (Back to the Future?) I'd love to eliminate our $100/month DirecTV bill. Is this my chance? (Couldn't do it earlier because we record/watch everything but the news.)...See MoreWhat magazines do you subscribe to or read regularly
Comments (41)In the past, I was a real magazine junkie. But over the past few years, I have really cut back. My daughter enjoys National Geographic so we still get that one and my son asked for Nat Geo Kids so we will subscribe to that one as well. I just got a really smashing great offer for Smithsonian and so will probably subscribe to it as well. Used to subscribe to Cottage Living but stopped when I realized that every "cottage" re-do was done by an architect and his artist wife, a lawyer and his antiques dealer wife, a doctor and his interior decorator wife and that the "cottages" were usually about 3000 to 5000 square feet in size. Not my idea of a "cottage". The magazine went under. I was not surprised. Although I will say that my most favorite part of that magazine was the back page where a reader sent in a photo of his or her home and an architect/designer did a lovely sketch of the home "cottage-d up". Wish I could get his name and send him a picture of my house. I love Bookmarks and must resubscribe but then I stop and look at the lists of titles I have written down from each issue of Bookmarks. I will never get through all of my TBR lists... let alone read magazines as well! How do you all find the time?! A note on the fundraising sales. My sister bought a mag from my daughter during a fundraising drive. The magazine title was switched on her from a travel magazine to a fishing magazine with no prior warning. And because she bought it through a clearing house, she had no recourse. The travel mag went under and the clearing house substituted something of similar value without consulting her.
