Living room help in a rental!

I'm moving into a rental property and need help designing the living room!

The furniture in the living room photo belongs to the previous renter and will be gone once I move in, so we've got a blank slate to work with! So far, we've got a TV Stand, a dark brown leather sofa, and a tan oversize chair to put in the space - I've included photos of these (apologies for the bad quality of the couch photos)

Please help with rug ideas, configuration of the furniture, and decor ideas!

We will need a rug (preferrably large and cozy), an ottoman (would prefer this over a coffee table for comfort), side tables, lamps, and curtains!

The dark brown sofa (don't have any of the decor surrounding it anymore)

I'm into the farmhouse look with mostly neutrals but am not afraid to add color - I love grey/white/beige colors but don't want to spend a lot which is why I'm trying to use what I've already got - which is more tan and brown in this room so far. I'm mostly just having trouble finding what would go well with the furniture I have currently to make it cohesive.

Open to any suggestions!

Is there a fireplace in this room? That would make a difference in regard to placement of the furniture. It would be nice to have a photo of the opposite side of the room to show window placement, possible fireplace etc.

Your photos are small so it’s hard to see the detail of all the furniture etc. Farmhouse to me means cozy, comfortable and decor items are useful rather than just decorative. Candles and fresh flowers on a coffee table rather than a bowl of glass spheres. You mentioned the other chair is a red plaid, which should work but can’t really see it. I suggest you move the wingback chair by FP instead, make it cozy with a throw and pillow, have some books nearby along with a floor lamp. See example below. I don’t think the rug works either. It may be the photo but on my monitor it looks “muddy coloured” and doesn’t do anything for the room. I think I’d like to see better pics of red chair, coffee table and tv stand before making other suggestions.

Here are some pictures from different angles! I plan on living here for hopefully the next 4 years. The sectional and the curtains belonged to the previous tenant so I'm planning on getting new ones. The wall looks black in the picture but it's actually a deep brown. As for the carpet, I'm thinking layering it with rugs until it's mostly covered. Would that work?

I think that oversize chair is going to be...well, "oversize" for your room. Get a club chair in a normal size and perhaps you can position it so both that chair and the sofa can use a long ottoman.

Your room needs a focal point and doesn't have the usual; a fireplace. I assume it will be the TV so make sure it sits on something quite nice and attractive.

Your furniture is neutral, so pick out a rug that suits you in the colors you love and work from there. Pick out some of the colors in that rug for pillows, the ottoman, and pictures. Be brave and get colors that will "pop". I would then use neutral colors in the curtains, lamps and shades, so they will go anywhere you might move to in the future.
