I made it to Lake Superior yesterday!

Serviceberry is feeding the birds now. Some know it as Shadblow, Saskatoon, Juneberry and other names. It is correctly Amelanchier. The birds love it.

From yesterday's hike to the highest point in the US that's within 25 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. Can you see the Sleeping Giant in the distance?

I got a call from our pharmacy. I won the draw for a cooler that was being given away by a Canadian vitamin/supplement company. It's a real good size, and all metal. woohooo, road trip!

Casey and Igmd_gaz, you've both brought back some memories today.

The lady slipper was my mother's favorite flower. They used to grow wild all over the ranch where she grew up.

I also remember many happy summers visiting my grandparents at the same ranch and going out to pick saskatoons. My grandmother made the most delicious pies out of the berries. I vividly recall one time I wouldn't stop eating them straight from the picking bucket and she warned me that I was going to eat a worm. Sure enough, the next handful I grabbed included a little green worm!

I attended a one room school and these photos are from 1958. 1st photo - the entire student body in front of the school. I am 6th from the right, standing between two boys. 2nd -I am on the left at the back, partly hidden by another student. 3rd - I'm in the middle, front row. Our teacher is in the back and the photo was taken when she arranged for us to go to the city for the day - very exciting! Here we are visiting the zoo. These were all her photos and when I encountered her many years later when I was an adult, she gave them to me. A real treasure!

DawninCal, those "Saskatoon" berries do make a fine pie. I made pie with them the first couple years after planting the 6 little trees here, but my pie making abilities are no more, so I let the birds enjoy them. That was my purpose in planting them in the first place....for the birds.

Stacy, your pictures reminded me of my school days. I attended a two-room country school. Many of those small rural schools are gone now and have been replaced by larger amalgamated schools. Still remember the good times we had when we played baseball on Friday afternoons with neighbouring country schools. Always looked forward even tho the transportation to the neighbouring school would horrify people these days.lol!! On an open back of a truck.

abgnhc - yes, the small school I attended had closed some time ago and any students in the area were bused to a large, centrally located school. However, now the population in the region has decreased so much that there are no children left any more. We played baseball regularly too and this was a sport very much enjoyed by adults as well.
