RO system queetions

Our well water, while odor free and good tasting, has high nitrates. So we have an under the sink TO system, hooked to the fridge/ice maker as well as the outlet on the kitchen sink. It's good water and does take 90% of the nitrates out.

Out of mostly morbid curiosity, how do whole-house systems work?

It seems a waste to pipe RO water through a shower or garden hose. Are they typically only sent to sinks where people are likely to grab drinking water?

Can such a system be done? Separate plumbing to the toilets and showers that bypass the system, but the rest of the system hooked up to all of the sinks in the house?

Is the water coming out the regular faucet, or do all the sinks have the separate little faucet for the RO water?

Also, what about hot water? One thing that is a pain with our system, is, when cooking, we can't fill a pot with hot water, so when we cook it takes longer for water to boil.
