Support for overhang on granite counter top.
Comments (38)Need advice please. have island 10ft long island x 4ft 2" (50inches)wide. overhang will be 12 inches down the entire 10ft length. have 24"d base cabinets plus another 12"d set of base cabinets back to back. (36 inches of base cabinets that granite will sit on). question is how many support posts will be needed down the 10ft length of overhang ?(14inch overhang) Will one support post on each end be sufficient or do I need 3? can't add metal supports into top of cabinets, not enough space between the cabinet doors and top of cabinets. no room for corbels. support posts are the only option. would like one on each end vs adding one in middle. help!...See MoreHow to judge the reputability of countertop installers?
Comments (20)I thought I'd update on what we did - we did end up going with the installer I found with the positive yahoo reviews. The sink cutouts and the single seam that they had to do look good, and they did basically manage to do the work on our timeline (a blizzard delayed everything in the city by a day, and the slabs they got from Zodiaq had some serious flaws that made them shatter, so they had to return them and replace them with some Caesarstone slabs instead, but even working around these issues, they managed to get the job done quickly). The only possibly quibble is that there are uneven gaps a bit at the far back of the countertop between the countertop and the wall, but the walls are really not straight at all, so I'm not sure that I can fault the installers for this (are they supposed to template the wavy back walls somehow? - I also didn't clearly say that we weren't intending to put in a backsplash, so perhaps this is my fault in not communicating clearly enough). So while we weren't intending to put in a backsplash, we are doing that now to address this issue, but since it is not too expensive or complicated to do this and it should fix the issue, I'm ok with that. I did end up joining Angie's list in the end, but I found it totally overwhelming and difficult to navigate - there were hundreds of firms listed under countertops in the NYC area, but none of the ones I had already considered or had recommended to me were listed, they almost all seemed to have the same ratings, and most of them were not specifically fabricators - they seemed to include a lot of general kitchen supply places (like Home Depot, for example), so I gave up. Maybe if I had had more time, I could have figured out how to use those listings more effectively, but in the end I just didn't feel up to prolonged weeding through, and I felt pretty comfortable talking to the firm we ended up going with (and figured that the positive yahoo reviews had to mean they were at least of a certain basic standard). Thanks again for all the advice and feedback - I really appreciate it during this complicated process that can be so overwhelming for someone who has never renovated before!...See MoreNew Countertop doesn't allow installing drawerfronts
Comments (28)Frameless design or full overlay cabbinets have been around for decades. There is nothing ''wrong'' with the design of the cabinets. It's a poor counter fabricator who relies on having old fashioned partial overlay cabinets to bail him out of a substandard counter install. And if he actually installed counters on those cabinets with Liquid Nails as the OP says, then he isn't a pro, and deserves to learn the hack's lesson to get educated, or get out of the business. He should replace the cabinets and counters. If he won't do that, then he needs to not get paid anything, plus have complaints lodged publicly and professionally. If he's even licensed, which I would suspect not. The next victim down the line would appreciate you giving this guy the grief he deserves. He owes you. If you won't make the effort to hold him accountable, then you are doing his future customers a disservice by teaching him it's OK to do a crappy job as long as you can get away with it....See MoreSeam in granite counter top
Comments (51)Seeing this in 2024 and that seam is TERRIBLE! Either the technology has completely improved or people saying it’s completely fine just have a very low standard. 😳I have never signed off a counter with seems like this, nor will I....See Morejellytoast
