As the originator of the one cane removal technique, I can tell that it works sometimes. Sometimes is a whole lot better than never. One scientist has said to me that how can you tell it doesn't come back. I have responded to him, after ten years of good healthy growth, that should be enough. I don't think it works for fall infected hybrid teas as I didn't save any of mine that got fall infections that I saw the following spring. The other thing I do is check with a microscope to see if the infected bush is teaming with eriophyid mites. Mine aren't. I don't use insecticide or acaricides and I see beneficials at the microscopic and visbile to the naked eye sizes. Here's my ebook about RRD/RRv for those who haven't seen it before. I hesitate to comment as I'm not scientifically mined. Where I a novice rose grower with a few planted here and there. This article would seal the deal for me as I would likely not add another rosette the garden. When will the folks who right these articles dot their i's and cross their t's. Then get more information out to people. Rrv is not the end all to roses. We know they can be saved by observing closely and cutting out infected canes. The tricky part is to know what you are looking for. Rrv is less deadly to a rose (they can be saved) then aster yellows is to some 300 species of perennials and vegetables. Hosta virus x equally deadly to hosta and spreads much easier. Most gardeners would not welcome preforming a costly test to see if a rose where sick. Maybe we need a place to be mentioned where gardeners and go for advice. Chris from Hallson Gardens has been doing this for years for people wondering if a hosta is infected with virus x, bless his heart. Perhaps a reference to Garden Web or somewhere else.
