Plants produce chemical defenses like alkaloids. What is stupid is mono culture and cultural practices that rely on a single measure and the quick kill. Even if round up were non-toxic it would simply breed weeds that will develop immunity to it and simply waste the resource. The best chemicals are the ones produced by plants that always gravitate toward suppression. I don't mind using pyrethins judiciously because it is something that follows this pattern where it knocks down and suppresses without killing and altering the attacking species. It is also a naturally occurring chemical that does break down in sunlight. Quick break down is essential to prevent dilution and attenuated exposure to build resistance.Thats probably why nature made it that way. We have one person with a spray bottle so we can have buildings full of lawyers and accountants doing nothing. They were spraying DDT around as if there was no consequence, same with agent orange. We have seen this attitude before of spray and pray and it nearly killed off the national symbol. Many people pile up vegetative waste and allow it to be digested and then call it mulch instead of compost because then people will not expect too much from it even though it is compost. Many people will state, for simplicity, to never, ever compost "weeds" because that is a lot simpler then telling people that "weeds" can be composted, most of the time. What you do not want is the "weed" reproducing in your compost pile and to do that the seeds need to be viable and then your compost pile needs to get hot enough to cook those seeds, or the plants roots need to be the type that will grow new plants in about any environment that has enough moisture. Since many "weeds" (plants that are not wanted growing where they are not wanted) accumulate goodly amounts and types of nutrients just arbitrarily throwing themn away and not utilizing them in your garden is a waste of a good resource.

I’m so sorry this happened to you, this is terrible. I would consider pruning down the surviving roses significantly below the already damaged area…perhaps the herbicide has not traveled throughout the base of the plant and it can survive and regenerate. I hope you have also at the very least given ’lawn guy“ aka rose killer a very stern warning the stay the h3ll clear of your yard! ETA: I read up on Iron X. Apparently it’s a strong dose of cheleated iron, which of course is very benefiical to plants in the proper dosage, but burns them if too concentrated. So what you have is like a severe case of fertilizer burn. I bet the bases of most of those plants are still alive.
