Summer solstice!
Comments (15)It's always either/ or isn't it? -When what we want, when coming to weather extremes, is really neither/ nor! Here winter just kept on lingering on and on (as it did in many areas in the US as well). Now we've got a heat wave, that seems to be lingering around as well. With day temps at a steady 27â / 80âÂÂ, it's far from the worst heat wave we've experienced, but it's still hot enough for delicate ME to stay inside with the windows closed and the curtains shot during the daytime. So far we have only had 2.2mm rain this July, and it just might become a record breaker (unless we get the 40mm that they say have a 25% chance on Sunday), but of course I'm not worried about a lack of rain, since I can still water the balcony. -The other day though, I forgot to water.... NOT good! Especially the tomatoes looked like they had been moved to a desolate place in Sahara far away from watering cans, or even spitting llamas! -Apart from the one tomato, that's growing in cat litter in one of the window boxes as an experiment... Well, it seems it didn't notice one bit, that it didn't get any water the previous night! -And it had even taken so much time to take off, that I've been close to pulling it! -The other tomatoes have made it though, and I'm just hoping that there won't be any damage to the fruits! Grace: Your toms look very happy! I most certainly did not have fruits that plump in June! Does anyone have experience with Livingstone Daisies, Dorotheanthus bellidiformis (used to be known as Mesembryanthemum criniflorum)??? I bought some seeds at the botanical garden, and the plants I got from them have taken their sweet time to take off. -They seem bushier than I would have thought (compared to other kind of ice plants, I've grown), and have also taken their time to flower. I thought the warmer weather would be a help, but so far, I still have only one flower on one of the plants. I WANT MORE!!! -Any ideas as to what is going on? Do they need a certain age to go into flowering, or what sets them off? VG...See MoreIdyll # 483 - Summer Solstice
Comments (100)'bug, great class photo-looks like a Kousa behind you? Mine didn't flower as heavily. Seems to be sort of a pattern in my yard. I have never seen a Catalpa bloom-how pretty! Your picture of the field is spectacular. What I wouldn't give to look out and see space like that! I am going to have to have a talk with my one clematis. Really, it's not doing the same job as all of yours. Maybe a replacement or a challenger for the space is what is needed. Cindy, ah, so you are the one who brought us this weather! Well done and many thanks, friend! I have been enjoying it and getting some weeding done. That is an exercise in futility around here, I'm afraid. Oh well. Candy, I think your plumbago and hosta look great. Is that Tradescantia next to the Hosta? Mine is much more leggy and sparse. Are you beginning to get a sense of how pathetic my garden is at this point? :( Kathy, glad you are able to ease back into things this week. Enjoy that long weekend. BTW, I am going to start a savings account-special fund: IU8! Where have you all gone in the past? Guess I should get back to weeding. I really need to add more plants or have the ones already planted grow more quickly. Or maybe it is just that I never got mulch down this year. If I can get everything cleaned out a bit, maybe I can convince DH to lug some bags to the car and then around the yard so I can just open and dump. We'll see. Chelone, hope the end of the week is better for you. Drema, a month-long IU sounds marvelous-especially out there with Kathy. All those pictures are so enticing.!...See MoreHappy Solstice!!
Comments (20)Thanks, all. It's good to see ribaldry is alive and well at the WS Forum. I'm taking a holiday break from door and window staining, so I have time for the forum for awhile. Last summer's (phase one) remodel brought me 18 new windows and 9 new doors, and I have to stain them all this winter. After that, bank account willing, I have to buy the wood and tools so I can cut, stain and install all the trim molding in the new foyer, living room, powder room and master bed/bath suite. I doubt if I'll do much perennial sowing this season. I have so many plants in the nursery beds I think I can go another year without starting new ones. Plenty of existing things to divide. I'm definitely doing 'Maters and Peppers, though, and as many other veggies as I can find room for. Nice to see y'all again!...See MoreHappy Solstice!
Comments (9)Yes, Happy Solstice! It's officially "iced coffee and air conditioning season"! And it's only four months and 10 days until Halloween! Just in case anyone was wondering... We've had a few afternoon showers, and thank goodness for them! Cools things off a tad. Wow, 9 years old? Mine's... let's see... counting on fingers... 8 years (9 years in November). Wow. It doesn't seem like we've lived here that long. Cheers!...See MoreMike McGarvey
