Is my maple tree dying? Please help

Hi, I think my maple tree have some kind of disease. The leaves hv dark spots and drying. There are white spots on the branches too.

Can someone advise what disease is it and how to help my tree. I love this tree, will b very sad if I have to chop it off. It gives a good shade for my back yard.

I'm not sure what type of maple tree it is. Please also advise.

If you've had a stretch of wet weather this year, you probably have Maple leaf blister. Not a real problem and won't hurt the tree.

Those white spots on the limbs are lichen. A common occurrence appearing on many things in nature with trees being one of them. Again, not a thing with any consequence.

Your tree is Acer saccharum (Sugar maple).

bill's suggestions are good :-) Could also be maple anthracnose, which is a catch-all term for a variety of fugal leaf issues, none of which are serious and require no treatment. Mature maples like yours can handle it easily.

Water it when the soil is dry; dig down down a few inchesn to see. Mulch it, if you haven't already done so - as widely as possible, no deeper than 4" and no mulch in the 2-3" next to the trunk. Don't fertilize it. If the cambium, the layer just under the bark, is green whenever you scratch lightly at a twig/branch, then the tree is still alive and can recover. Good luck.

That looks awful. My lawn person did the same thing to one of my fig trees with his weed eater. For my fig tree, I wrapped the damaged trunk with a brand of nursery grafting tape called Buddy tape and wrapped a plastic trunk/tree guard around the bottom to protect the base for the future. A good grafting tape is perforated to let air in and will stick to itself making a tight seal. Several leaves had to be removed that were wilting so the tree could support the other leaves. I also started an air layer on a side branch in case the tree doesn't make it. I don't know if the same thing will help save your tree or not. Stark Bros. Nursery claims "tree guards do not protect against string trimmers/weed whackers and the like" but I've found it helps with small trees like ours. Best of luck with it.

"and the tree can live many years before succumbing." Operative word is 'can' here :-) VW can also work extremely rapidly and kill the tree in a matter of just a few days.....almost overnight! Larger, well established trees seem to deal with the pathogen a bit better and can live longer. And just to be clear, I am not confirming VW, although that IS a possibility. That really requires a plant pathology lab to confirm. And there can be other reasons for a partial dieback in midseason.

Hey guys, I have further researched what may be wrong with my lemon tree. The last leaves that fell actually persisted a while. They were withering but still hung on to the branch for a day. My branches are dying back. I think these symptoms indicate that the tree has experienced some frost damage. Right now, it's in a really sunny spot and the weather is hot in Toronto. It is 27 degrees Celsius in Toronto and will persist about 20 degrees Celsius for the rest of the week. I also understand that I will need to prune the tree from the dead branches. I understand about the fertilizer and the Nitrogen to Phosphorus to Pottasium ratio. This is my final question. Is it safe to prune the tree now when the weather is warm or should I wait a bit longer? Anyways, thank you for your help. I am still learning how to grow and take care of my own plants and wish to become an avid gardener.

We in Rochester NY, winter was milk but had lots of rain this spring even until now.

Sugar maple, does it mean I can tap the tree to get the maple (sap it is? Don't know what it call)

I agree on the leaf problem. Largely ignore it.

Does picture 4 show a number of old wounds on the trunk which are being encapsulated well? Maybe I'm seeing wrong on the old CRT monitor.

If so, did you have another tree removed a decade or so ago which exposed this one to more sun? Again if so, there isn't alot to do about it at this point. The tree is going to have them sealed off shortly. If they are mushy inside I might call someone to have a look.

Hi, I'm not sure about the trunk. It was like that when we moved to this place. There's another big tree in the front yard which we already take it down. Too big & leaning towards the house.

There's no mushy/soft spots. If there is in future I will call for someone to look at it. Tq :)
