Help I have deer munching on my roses! What to do?
Comments (19)Hey Markiz37, your recipe is similar to mine. Altho I use liquid from Ivory bar soap kept in water in a plastic container, and liquid garlic. And my husband is now watching his colesterol, so he saves me all the egg yolks. I use about 5-6 of them now instead of 3 whole eggs. The beef bouillion is an interesting idea too. I've tried the netting. They still got in, and in fact they ran off with it the first time. One of the neighbor kids said he saw a buck with the netting all wrapped around his antlers and was dragging it all over with him. The next time, they jumped thru it and it went onto the road in the night and my neighbor drove over it and it wrapped around the axle of her car and I had to pay for her repairs! Never again!! The dog doesn't keep them out. But then, she doesn't always notice them when they sneak in the back yard. For me, the ONLY thing that works is my homemade concoction, similar to Markiz37's. I have to spray 2 gallons worth since I have over 1600 roses. The deer will not eat my roses if they are sprayed well enough. This last time, I went over two weeks without spraying and not one thing was eaten. But when I saw a young doe running up the road past our house the other day (in broad daylight no less) I decided it was time to spray again. Now, if I could just get the thrips to go away.......See MoreDid I do the right thing??
Comments (21)I agree that the alarming thing is that he went to his friend's mom with the problem. It's one thing for a 10 yo to play one parent off the other, but to turn to a third party adult is another situation entirely. Kids are told in school here that "If someone is hurting you or being mean to you, talk to a trusted adult" and if my BF's son or one of my N&Ns ever did that, I'd be very very worried. I think I'd side with with poster who said to talk to a school counselor (etc) before calling CPS, considering since you've never seen any physical signs of abuse... I personally would be hesitant to jump straight to CPS, but it DOES need to be brought to someone's attention who is trained in this sort of situation. My BF's son is 8, and he'll often tell us "Mom said I wouldn't live to see nine if I keep leaving my Lego on the stairs" (obviously she's not serious)... Last week he told me "Grandma is sooooo mean, she gave me a spanking this morning when Dad came to get me" (I asked BF about this - it was at pickup time, so he saw it - she smacked him on the butt for talking back as he walked out of the room. Perhaps not the best approach to deal with sass, but certainly not the vicious beating A__ made it out to be) I don't worry too much about that sort of thing, but I WOULD be worried if he had bruises that certainly weren't from playing soccer or tobogganing, or he told a friend's parent, or he had a large-scale freakout about going back to his mom's. You're right for being concerned about this!...See MorePat Austin octopus arms galore! Am I doing the right thing?
Comments (19)OMG, Daisy - that's absolutely STUNNING!!! Amazing that you can grow a rose so huge & beautiful & healthy in a pot! I hope my Pat will be half as beautiful as yours, one day! So far, I find it a bit frustrating that although she has a lot of buds, they never seem to open all at once - so that I get the effect like in your photos of roses all over the bush. They seem to just open one or two at a time - or at the most, in a cluster. Do you think this is because the bush isn't mature yet? Thank you for the parasol suggestion! Yes, I'd like to do the same. The only problem is, mine is in the middle bed and there isn't really any space to put up an umbrella, which would need a heavy base, etc. I did suggest buying one but my husband wasn't keen. He thinks it will clutter up our already tiny garden. Looking at yours, I'm really tempted to get an obelisk or something so that my Pat can climb up it - but I think, given the size of my tiny garden, I'm probably better to do as Nik suggested and prune Pat down to size - and hope she'll still bloom as a smaller bush. Anyway, thank you again!...See MoreDeer ate most of my hydrangea buds
Comments (10)I have a cheaper solution and it works as good as Deer Out even better. Take one beaten egg and mix with water. Take out the white little vein called Chalazae that anchors the yolk in the center of egg as it plugs the spray bottle. Find a spray bottle like size of tilex and fill to top with water. It smells badly because of the sulphur and deters the deer and rabbits etc. Make sure to spray after a rain. Smell lasts long time. Good luck. It really works....See MorePrea Winter
