How Far do Slugs Travel?
Comments (11)A few days ago, temps went down to 2 and 3 deg.C...that's below 40 deg.F. Except for about a dozen hostas that still stand up...the big majority had yellowed up...their mound is falling...getting closer and closer to the ground. SO, I decided it was time to start cutting my hostas. (I cut everything about 6 inches from the ground). In one particular very small garden...as I was raking the leaves out of the garden to dispose of them in my compost pile, what a surprise to see so many slugs. In that 4 feet wide by 25 feet garden I killed 105 slugs yesterday. I thought of Sassy who remember said she used the ammonia solution right off a large container and poured the liquid directly on the hosta...instead of using the pressure spray. Well Allelluia Sassy...I did the same thing..and believe me there were some slugs that had hidden right in the center of some crown. I find now that it's more important to really be vigilant when we clean up our hosta gardens at this time of the year to get rid of those slimmy slugs. I find also that slugs do not travel that much on the lawn as colder temps are here...but they rather look for places to hide...like along and under my 8x8 wood that I use instead of some stones. I thought that my war against slugs was over but it's not. I will go after these creature until snow falls if need be. Papou...See Morenematodes! how far do they travel?
Comments (19)The only ant listed on that page is the imported fire ant. These creatures work by bringing a disease to the hose insect. Nematodes feed on a certain microbe. It so happens that that microbe is deadly to many species of insects. The nematode is tiny compared to the hosts and can enter the host through almost any orifice. Once they enter, the wipe the disease microbe onto the host and the disease progresses to kill the host. The nematode leaves behind thousands of eggs which soon hatch. The new 'todes feast on the diseased corpse of the host and then launch off to find their own hosts. If I remember correctly that cycle takes a week. Thus if you have ideal conditions, you can multiply your nematode population by millions in a week or so. The weather forecast is in the future and is not a factor in applying nematodes. They need wet soil as soon as they hit the ground. The best way to apply is to an already saturated soil. Water deeply first then apply while the soil is wet....See MoreTo spray or not to spray in the Northeast
Comments (23)You can also use Bonide Fung-Onil. Both the Ortho and the Bonide have the same concentration of Daconil. Some stores carry the Bonide but not the Ortho. ****** YES!!! bcday knows that I'm growing quite a few tomato varieties that are new to all or most b'c I send her the seeds for same and she does most of the seed production for SSE listings, etc. So like a jerk I called my local Agway Saturday not remembering it was a Holiday and also called the local hardware store; they weren't home either. This AM I called Agway and at first mentioned Ortho Garden Disease Control, they had none, Steve called the main warehouse in PA and they were totally out and said they did expect some in in about two weeks. So then I mentioned the Bonide Fung-Onil and Steve actually had a pint of it in the store and NOW! I kept saying thru this whole conversation that I wanted the 29.6% chlorothalonil and he kept asking me to spell it and then said he had copper spray which says on the side Blight and I said no way. he said you really do know what you want, don't you. LOL He was not in the mood to be told that Daconil acutally blocks the LB and fungal foliage receptor sites on the leaves.( smile) Then call Freda, Freda will pick it up tomorrow and then we see if my pump sprayer is still alive, but if not, she can use the 2 gal watering can just as well. Everything will get it, the tomatoes, potatoes, cukes and squash, the latter two primarily for mildew and Daconil is great for mildew. I'm just not willing to take a chance on the special tomato varieties I'm growing but I can't get out there with the walker to even see if anything is going on with the tomatoes. Freda will do that tomorrow, but then there's more rain, heavy T storms predicted today and tomorrow, so we may wait until Wednesday to spray. Carolyn...See MoreDo you travel with linen spray?
Comments (0)And if so, what brand/scent? Does it work? We were away this weekend and stayed in two different hotels. One was a Marriott property and the other was an upscale downtown Kimpton hotel. In both cases, the sheets did not smell nice and I assume it's the detergent they use. I wished I'd had some linen spray with me. I spotted some at tjmaxx yesterday but the bottle was too big for travel....See Morewritersblock (9b/10a)
