Way too early but 2 of my daylilies opened today

My first two daylilies opened today......... only a month early . Totally crazy seasons around here . No snow this winter , way too much rain early this spring that drowned and then froze and led to losing quite a few of my daylilies and now drought so bad the plants are rushing to bloom. And people wonder why I call where I live the armpit of Canada ......

I am glad to see your season is starting. Your seedling is lovely. I like the big throat and the way the petals and sepals curl.

lisa2004 - I am zone 5 in Massachusetts. In my basement, I start mostly annuals and tomatoes and don't start my seeds under lights until 1st or 2nd week of April if you can believe it! I put my plant seedlings out in the garden Memorial Day or the week after depending on how cold the ground is. So I only keep the new seedlings inside for 6 or 8 weeks. If you start too early inside there are many drawbacks such as there is a chance that plants will be leggy, grow too large for your containers, you have to pay higher electric costs and monitor the plants for water longer etc. If you are starting perennials you could start earlier as they take longer to get going. I have been starting plants in my basement for 14 years now and used to start much earlier and have learned from experience later is better... Until then I get my labels ready which I print on my computer and organize my lists. I map out how many plants I need based on what happened the previous year etc. So there is somethings to do while waiting to get planting but I know what you mean about wanting to do something garden related. In the meantime, I try to go to some of the garden shows in the area or go to a gardening related lecture or class.

Good eye, Wayne! With the mild temps we've had, my son and I went to the nearby creek yesterday. No snakes seen but plenty of Southern Two-lined Salamanders. My photos were blurry so I don't have any to post. It's even warmer here today so I bet there's a snake sunning somewhere. Thanks.

I just saw outdoor jack o'lantern pieces in front of Kroger before the kids are back in school and thought that was bad. Have received a couple of Halloween/fall themed catalogs recently, but not Christmas (unless DH is pitching them before I see them). I understand stores that sell for crafting stocking early. It can take months to do some projects (needlework, esp) and some folks start making in quantity to sell. I', used to those showing up in July, but I can't think about Christmas when kids are still out of school and we're being told we are just getting to the heart of hurricane season (supposed to be an active one and we haven't really ahd anything yet). And until the rain hit this past weekend, we'd been up over 100 degrees.

For signet_gw: Scape height is between 28" & 30"; bud count is 8-9 buds per scape with 5 of 7 having 8 and 2 of 7 having 9. My best estimate is that this is the beginning of mid-season for me. Ploidy is a mystery. I posted two photos below - can someone tell me how many branches they see?

this seedling is a mini probably just 3 inches across because of the recurve , short and not at all the kind of daylily I like but I decided a couple of years ago that I needed to keep some short daylilies because not everyone likes tall ones like I do . I do love its big green throat though

I like your seedling! I have quite a few smalls, they work at the front of the beds for me.

Wasn't the weather crazy everywhere? I remember seeing your posting of all your water. And then you had freezing after that? Yikes! That was enough to take out some of your lilies. Sorry. Something we cannot control but surely gives up enough to complain about. I think the weather is why so many of mine bloomed in the foliage this year. Anyway, glad to see your season starting and your seedling does look good with that green throat.

Really nice color on Purple D'Oro and I like that seedling a lot. This is definitely a crazy weather year, almost everybody's daylilies seems to be affected some way.

Interesting that your getting daylily blooms already. Those are really early based on your prior years blooms. Lots of scapes here but blooms will most likely not start for another couple of weeks.
