Outdoor Thermometer - which type do you like?
Comments (22)And if all of these fancy gadgets are too much for you, and you want something even more basic than Carl's weather sticks, I offer the Deck-centric Weather Forecast. First thing in the morning I look out at my deck.. - Is it wet? It must have rained overnight and the temperature is above freezing. - Are there splashes in the wet? It's still raining. - Is the whole deck wet or just the part not under the overhang? If the whole deck is wet than there's strong winds from the east (or northeast or southeast). If only part, then it's relatively calm or the wind is from the west (or northwest or southwest). North winds are mostly blocked by the house. - Is there snow on the deck that wasn't there yesterday? It snowed overnight and the temperature is at or below freezing. - Is the snow depth increasing? It's snowing. - Are there shadows on the deck? It's sunny. This morning part of the deck was wet but no splashes, and there was a small amount of snow around the edges. A little later I started seeing shadows but on and off. Therefore, it rained overnight but is not raining now, and the temperature is just around freezing. There's little wind and the sky is partly cloudy. And the squirrel conned me into throwing out peanuts again. The next level of the forecast is to look at the porch on the other side of the house, where similar rules apply except for the wind direction. Claire...See MoreBona sonic mop? Which cordless vacume do you like most?
Comments (6)I wanted to start a thread about cordless vacs. I have 3: Dirt Devil Quick Power -- useless on hard floors Shark cordless sweeper -- not good on hard floors, can pick large debris off the surface of carpet. Swiffer Vac -- OK. Works well enough to actually use, at least for my small kitchen. Suction is not good enough to quickly pick up the large pieces of grass and debris my dogs track in. I do use it to vacuum the kitchen every day; it's faster and cleans better than sweeping, and I don't want to haul out my whole canister vacuum. HOWEVER, its negatives: - I think it's a pain to clean the filter, clean out the cup, and get it back on the unit. I've gotten the hang of it now, so it's not so bad. - As I mentioned above, suction not powerful enough to pick up larger debris. - Battery lasts only a year or two, then only gives you a minute or two of charge. So, when I put hard flooring throughout the whole house, the Swiffer Vac isn't going to do it for me. The suction won't be powerful enough to pick up the pieces of grass and debris, the dust cup is way too small, and the filter needs cleaning too frequently. Therefore, I am considering - Dyson DC35, - Hoover Linx, and - Roomba I think I'd like to get whichever works better the Dyson or the Hoover Linx, plus the Roomba. Has anyone used BOTH the Dyson and Hoover Linx?...See Morewhich burner do you use the most?
Comments (33)At "home", growing up it was the left front burner for proximity to the counter and sink - right side of stove was against the refrigerator (hated that setup). And usually the right side burners were covered with pots and pans for storage. Had a small kitchen with 2 small cupboards in it. First apartment I started with the right front, since there was nothing to the left of the stove and the second apartment was reversed but I cooked on whatever. In the house I've used the right front primarily, front left is the second burner used and the back burners used for warming or when I needed additional burners only. Now the new stove has different sized burners but still is front right the larger, as is the rear left and the front left and rear right are small burners. But I use what I need and cook. This isn't like a gas stove that needs to match the pan size so much. My cookware distributes heat well and the 3 qt saucepan covers the larger burner fairly well too so I don't obsess over it. And the Nesco, convection oven, oven or microwave might also be in use so it's whatever gets the job done for me....See MoreWhich view do you like most?
Comments (7)B, previously right, because the separation between each post is better. In the left one, now A, the extra line with edit options visually divides the content, so one post almost appears like two when quickly scanning the page. For B, I would experiment with adding the separator at the top of the first comment as well. You could also experiment with putting the actions line under the title. You could gain some space. Also, this is what everybody complains about. Could the right column be skinnier? 1/4th of the page instead of 1/3rd? I find the most recent posts interesting, but I think most people are either interested in gardening or home improvement, so having two separate boxes for the two, may generate more hits for you. You could place one on top of the other based on what the current forum type is, gardening, or home. This post was edited by wannabeGardnr on Thu, Mar 13, 14 at 12:10...See MoreAnglophilia
