What's your dream wishlist 2008?
Comments (36)I've become much more disenchanted with selecting rose varieties than ever before - I'm not sure why, maybe because I'm still limited to my own window ledge and haven't been home to my old garden in a few years, but I don't think I'll be ordering much this season. I'm dismayed at the closing of Sequoia and may try to get a few rare things from them before the end. It always seems that the most promising varieties are quite out of reach, so for now, I think I'll concentrate my efforts on breeding more than acquiring and see if I can't make the rose I'm craving but simply cannot buy. At work, I'll continue adding to the collection of wonderful Chinese rose species and cultivars; this is one of my little pet projects to increase public (and institutional) awareness of these amazing and largely well-adapted plants. Marianne (if you read this), do you really feel that both helenae cultivars are equal in hardiness, and that your zones 4-5 are warmer than ours? From reading which roses do well where in Scandinavia, I was under the impression that a zone 4-5 hardy rose where you live is roughly equivalent to one at my home in Minnesota, also zone 4-5. I was also fairly sure I understood that 'Lykkefund' is less hardy than 'Hybrida', which hopefully is soon on its way to Ashdown from Europe courtesy of a certain GW member! Comments (8)I would actually wait until FW's has their stock replenished (check with them to see if they can give you an estimate). I have ordered from many places, but, for container citrus, as far as I am concerned, FW does the best with developing root systems. I don't know exactly what they do, to create SUCH healthy, vigorous, expansive root systems, but this is what will give your citrus tree the best advantage. I I never yet been disappointed with one of their trees. I have never lost a single one. And, I don't baby my trees. Did you see the photo of my beautiful Bouquet de Fleurs Sour Orange tree in my thread on Citrus 2013? You might want to see what I'm talking about. That tree is not quite a year old, yet. It has doubled in size. And, when I slid those pots over a bit, all of them had roots growing out the bottoms of those VERY large, tall pots! Now, granted, my trees are outside year 'round, but still, this tree looks like it's been here for 5 years, not 10 months. Other options would be Clifton's, but they ship in soil, and their prices are very expensive, imho. They're very nice folks, but their prices are a bit high. I'm not a fan of Logee's. Have had almost zero success with their plants. You can try Bucks Record Farms in Florida, they have an excellent reputation, I think Mike has bought from them? Now, just my opinion, and others will most certainly offer up theirs. But, Four Winds is consistently excellent. Really, really excellent. Patty S....See MoreCredit card took a hit !!! :)
Comments (47)Laura, thank you for thinking of me and trying to message me. I have no idea how to fix that here on Houzz.. :) I have been keeping in touch with Ruth about the Bergamot since last summer. It was supposed to be ready by late summer 2016. Then late fall 2016. Then spring 2017. Then mid- summer 2017.. Then September.. October and now next spring 2018!! Man, that is one slow growing tree! :D I just talked to Ruth again last Thursday and she said it should be ready by the middle of October. I talked to her brother this afternoon and he said it should be ready by the end of October. I have a feeling it will not be ready, like you said, until early spring 2018. It is good that you went ahead and ordered it from FW.. I wonder what rootstock the Bergamot is on and that Harris and FW are using. It sounds like it needs a pretty warm, consistent temperature to get a good growth rate.. I know that they are batting down the hatches in Leu of the hurricane. I am worried for them all also. I told them to stay safe and my prayers are with them. PS: I asked Ruth about the Sugarbelle Tangelo last year after seeing it listed on the back of their brochure. She told me the same thing as you, Laura. Not available yet to the general backyard growers.....See MoreCitrus for Canada! Phoenix Perennials' new citrus list for 2018.
Comments (53)Wow interesting! Here is my list with some minor differences with yours: # 1 shiranui # 2 gold nugget: a favorite on this forum! # 3 kishu: Brian, I bought a bag of tiny small mandarins at my asian grocery (the size is about a looney or smaller). It wasn’t label as kishu so I am not sure but they were very, very sweet. They really taste like orange life saver. I read about this description before but never thought much about that until I taste it. The description ws very accurate. # 4 xie shan: winner at the citrus expo held in alabama. Must be really good to win the favor of all those enthusiastic citrus lovers. # 5 page: never taste it but seems a classic to have. Everyone was raving anout this variety in another forum some years. Sugar Belle, Pixie, Daisy and Tango are all great varieties but I never taste them and can’t find lot of information on them....See MoreSammers510
