How are your Midwest roses in 2008
Comments (12)I'm reconsidering everything and almost sorry I started up this type of gardening again and took on too much for me by myself, don't have that many roses but enough. It was fun and gave me something to look forward to, but now no longer fun and not only work but a lot of extra worry. Even if it rains a couple days before, the beds dry up too fast, amended what I could, not making any difference where the sun really beats down and temps go into the upper 80's and 90's, am trying to catch up on mulching but didn't get enough preliminary work done soon enough and did some really heavy duty work for me as I was able since mid-April. Now it is just too hot and supposed to stay that way all week. BS not as bad this year as last, will let it go for now. No PM yet. Leaves damaged from something, probably multiple causes earlier, don't know how to be a conservative sprayer yet and with what and will hold off but if I keep at this am going to have to spray some things which I never planned to do, more work. Now the beetles are really getting me down, and we're only in our second week of that. Never saw one before, wasn't looking for them, until I put the roses in last year but they've been here for awhile. They don't seem to bother any of the lilies and a few other things, but don't want a whole yard full of lilies, beautiful though they are. Hosta is good, don't want too much of that either because I do love colorful flowers the most....See MoreYear-end Review: Worst Blackspotter in your 2008 garden?
Comments (41)Funny how different our experiences can be with the same variety of rose. I had mentioned that Moore's Striped Rugosa doesn't tolerate spray, and Paul (Trospero) corrected me by saying it does. OK, MINE chemical burned from it, and I've heard others say the same thing. I smiled, too, when Sunnishine mentioned Livin' Easy & Easy Goin' being bad blackspotters. My Livin' Easy never got more than a trace of it, even growing next to a bad BS'er. Just goes to show the value of taking everyone's advice with a grain of salt. We each have particular growing conditions that can greatly effect health outcomes. And sometimes our particular plants even differ in constitution from others of the same variety. That's why its good to get as wide an array of input as possible, and even then treat none of it as gospel etched in stone. Mike...See MoreWhat's on your most wanted for 2008 list
Comments (20)Hi Renee, I live a couple of miles outside a smallish town in the north of England. I believe allotments originally started because a lot of the North of England was very industrialised with coal mining and wool mills being the main source of employment. The houses built to accommodate workers were small with little or no gardens. Social reformers at the time realized that workers would be happier and healthier if they had access to the outdoors and fresh food. As the wages were traditionally very low and the workers poor they were suffering from malnourishment and diseases associated with that. So land was bought and set aside for this use. It was divided into plots and each plot was alloted to a named worker, hence the name "allotments". There are a number of allotment societies in Britain and the Green Party is trying to lobby the government to create more, especially as our immigration level means that new homes being built have, once again, little or no garden space. History repeating itself, I guess! best wishes, Nikki...See MoreWhat's On Your 2013 Wishlist?
Comments (58)#1 on my list is Kapalua Also want to replace some of the ones that I lost: Gold Coast Peachy Essie's Fantasy Mary Moragne Compacta Beach Chocko Delight Gardenia Gladys K Brandt Kaneohe Sunburst I'm not even going to try Black Purple or Orange Splendor again, seems not many people can keep them alive. I would rather spend my money on hardier varieties. I have a list of several from JJ's that I want. I've never lost a JJ plant. I get the larger sizes and they are loaded with roots and are more like small trees if you get the larger sizes. This year, I'm getting less, but larger sizes. Now that we have to move them inside in the winter, I would rather have larger, hardier than a bunch of struggling babies.
