Comments (8)When my Le Vesuve from Vintage had its first bloom I was completely convinced that I had received a different rose. I later bought three more Le Vesuve and never saw another bloom that looked like that first one. At the time I wasn't very familiar with teas but now I know better. Speaking of teas, when I received my French import No 92 Nanjing, it had a lovely pink flower with a good number of petals. This rose has now been in the ground for over a year and I've been pinching the buds off. I finally let one develop and was so disappointed to see a homely bloom with FOUR cerise-pink petals. I know Jeri's is blooming well and I think hers is newer than mine. This morning La France had an open bloom and had five petals! Poor soil, lack of rain, changeable weather, who knows? Comments (7)Creekside Manor Tea - If this is Jean Bach Sisley... this is a lovely rose, very china-like, round bush shape. The flowers were sometimes quartered and very pretty, lovely baby pink. Sadly, I took it out too soon before I knew about summer leaflessness and how much water roses need. PM is not a problem here. Rosette Delizy - Wonderful! But for some reason she was plagued by botrytis (no normal flowers her last season) and cane dieback (sudden blackened canes) in my garden. I can't imagine this being a general problem with this rose, but no other rose in my garden did this. In her 3rd season she really started getting a wide vase shape, easily becoming 8' across, probably close to 6' tall. No clue how big she could have gotten but I've seen a very tall, narrow one nearby growing in clay. I loved her but she may have been too big for my small garden. I thought she'd be tall and fairly narrow. When she got wide, that was too much. Souvenir de Pierre Notting - In my garden very slow to mature, very small, very fine/delicate canes, probably vase shaped, not a ground hugger. I've moved her a few times so she's not on a normal growth schedule, but I'm told by people in the SE that she only gets to about 5' size. Her flowers are pretty and fat but I haven't seen many. She nods. Le Vesuve - Gorgeous, gorgeous blooms and lots of them from infancy, fairly round symmetrical growth, getting wider than tall, lots of crossing growth with u-turns and tangles, a real thicket. Perfectly healthy here. Mine is probably 8' wide and almost 5' tall. White Maman Cochet - Less awkward and angular than Maman Cochet, huge beautiful flowers, mostly white with red outer petals, turning mottled deep pink with age, sturdy canes. Mine went in the ground in February & already has several 5-6' canes that lean out, looking like it'll be a wide one. Anna Olivier - Mine is Bermuda's so probably not the same rose, sensitive to alkaline conditions, gorgeous fat pale yellow flowers, flatter than the Cochets. Mme Lombard - Only 14 months in the ground, beautiful blooms. Lots of growth, but I have to remove a plumbago to get a good look at her. I think she's going to be big. Good foliage, kind of leathery. I like all of them very much. I hope they do well for you, Rosefolly. I have Alexander Hill Gray, and I'm impressed with his smaller size so far, even growth, finer structure, very nice medium yellow flowers with lots of petals, flowers not as larhe as Cochets. Comments (29)Thank you, Sheila, for bringing back this discussion. And thank you, Kim and Jin for giving the backstory on Ping Dong Lui Ji and Isabella Ducrot. Funny story. Spring of 2018 I ordered Ivor's rose and Siren's Keep form Rose Petals Nursery. Instead of Ivor's Rose I was sent a rose that was allegedly Isabella Ducrot. I notified Rose Petals and they refunded my money, but I decided to plant ID in my one remaining tea spot and hope for the best. It took off from there and kept trying to bloom so it was hard to keep up with pinching off the buds. The several blooms that didn't get pinched were light pink/white and had a nice fragrance. This rose didn't look like ID pictures and didn't seem to grow like a tea. It went through winter and through winter/spring transition, when I tend to lose roses, without problems. It went through all the rain in the world this winter and early spring to no rain- around 2" from late spring through early fall and record high temps through Sept. and early October. Bugs were bad this spring and deer predation has been heavy because of the drought. Even though my roses are in protective wire cages, the deer ate anything they could reach. To add to problems, my mother was hospitalized, then in rehab and then stayed with us for a couple months. I wasn't able to spend the time on my garden that it needed. Through it all the Not-Isabella-Ducrot continued to grow, I don't know how well or even when it bloomed. I can tell you that it grew better than anything else out there and it needs a much bigger cage. It has been rudely healthy. It reminds me of Bermuda Spice which I also have, not because they look exactly alike, but because they have similar growth styles. I wondered if they were related? Anyway, thank you for the the name and the backstory. I never would have ordered this rose on my own but it's a gift I'm glad to get. FWIW anyone who can grow Spice can probably grow this rose. Also, I'd give it a try if I lived in 6b and had a spot where it was protected from the wind....See MoreIt’s a planting frenzy!
Comments (52)Ingrid, I am so shocked. You do have eagle eyes :) . I did not made that but order it Bec I wanted savory dish and I knew everything will be sweet. It was all gone and it was delicious made by the owner . I thank him for that. My favorite was scones with whip butter made with oranges skin and something. I will be getting the recipe next time. Vap, my friend from Pennsylvania made Pizzelle sprinkle with white sugar powder. It was the best one I ever tasted in my life. The store ones taste nothing like homemade. Mandy moved back to PA about 5 yrs ago. She loves to cook and bake. I called her Mrs. Claus Bec she is so kind, loving, big heart, Rosy cheeks and very, very motherly. Actually, everyone at work including guests thinks she is Mrs. Claus. I was reading on Souvenir Umi and looking at pics. I am not good in this at all but hopefully I learned to be skillful one day. jin...See MoreRosylady (PNW zone 8)
