Have Aloe polyphylla/Spiral aloe.
Comments (3)Hi-I notice that you're both in zones 8 and 9, so just a word of caution here: a.polyphylla is completely intolerant of temperatures >85° inside the pot--cool roots are a must. Speaking from personal experience, keep the pots themselves shaded completely from direct sun. You might even put a few ice cubes around the edges of the pots if it gets very warm. Here are a few of mine just a couple of hours ago. I don't worry unless the temp goes below 25°, and mild snow is a relief to them: The 2 largest pots are 22", and the other 2 are 17", and in need of larger pots. As a rule of thumb, the pot should be at least 2" wider than the leaf span. Happy growing! Rick in CT...See MoreAloe Polyphylla - what to expect?
Comments (19)Thanks for more info...I'm probably not going to have much luck...but at least now I'll know why. Why oh why do I venture into the world of other succulents or try to grow cacti from seed. I should just "stick" with what I sort of know. At least until I retire and have more time. Norma, I gave up on the mister idea since I couldn't figure out how to hook it up--my water sources are at capacity because of my flower beds. I have a love/hate relationship with my drip system. When it works it's great, but I've lost a few ornamentals because I didn't figure out the drippers failed until it was too late. I bet that guy in San Diego was very upset....See MoreAloe Polyphylla purchase
Comments (12)Thank you all for your valuable information and knowledge in your postings - a little story about me... I found and joined gardenweb in 2001 - I was seriously into cacti and succulents since early 1990's - I had hundreds of plants in my collection - received many plant trades from members here - up until a divorce about 7 years ago - devastated I passed my entire collection of plants to family and friends in So Calif - I had to forgot about gardening to move on and heal. I believe I must have healed cause I got the green thumb recently and bought my first plant since the divorce - this Aloe Polyphylla, hope to start posting pictures and sharing with the forum more plants I collect - PS, moved from So California to Hawaii - alot of tropicals out here to get interested in, Aloha...See MoreBusted Aloe polyphylla
Comments (15)Soil: 50-50 turface + perlite + slow release fertilizers. I bury the pot in the ground to keep the roots cool. Plant is at an angle to prevent water from pooling in the center. Full sun. Watered daily in the summer. Stays in that spot unprotected except when nights are regularly below freezing (December to March). January and February it sits in my garage - cool, dry, no light. December and March, if there is a prolonged very cold and wet period, I will move it under cover. It needs a wide pot, but the root system is not deep. The absolute most important factor, in my opinion, is that the root zone must be kept cool. A potted plant exposed to typical ambient summer air temperatures (80+ F) will lead to failure unless your climate is cool i.e. Pacific NW. These are alpine plants, not "desert" plants. They like strong sun, cool and damp soil, and good air flow. x...See MoreKara 9b SF Bay Area CA
