Aloe Polyphylla - what to expect?

keithalex

I just brought an 8" Aloe Polyphylla into my apartment, and am wondering what is the best way to care for the plant. I know this is a complete rookie question, so please be gentle.

The apartment is fairly dry and north facing, though it does get good light during the day, with a little direct sun in the late afternoon. A few specific questions:

1) How frequently should I water, and how much? I read 1" every 2-3 weeks online)

2) The tips of some spines are brown - should I prune them or just let them be?

3) How fast should I expect it to grow - is one row/year about right, or faster?

4) Is there any way to safely accelerate its growth (e.g. fertilizer)?

5) What should I avoid (e.g. watering directly on the plant, too much water)?

6) How much larger should the pot be than the base of the plant?

7) What does it mean if the plant is flattening a little?

If you need more details, please let me know.

Thanks everyone - Keith (humble new indoor gardener)
