Finished end panels next to range and/or dishwasher

Hi All,

I'm trying to understand what's normally done for the cabinets that flank a slide in range or dishwasher. They will be drawer stacks (with the exception of the sink cab).

Do people put end panels on those cabinets so the unfinished sides don't show?

Also are most DW's now installed by mounting to the cabinets on the sides since if the counter top is stone you can't really mount into that? Or can you?

We opted not to put end panels around our range or dishwasher. Instead we saved them for the literal ends of cabinet runs.

I panelled everything that didn't get too hot (inc. the warming drawer which only gets a little hot), so if I vote for panelled, it probably doesn't mean much. A panel ready dishwasher costs more, however, plus having a a decent carpenter to make you a nice panel if you want it to look like a cabinet, not just like from the same company. Someone in a similar situation used a white DW and it looked good, but I'd probably just go with stainless at that point. If you want the panel to look like a cabinet (or drawers or whatever), your carpenter can make a frame that looks like the cabinet frames, and you can put fronts within it to match your doors/drawers. Or you could just buy the frame and fronts from the cabinet company. The carpenter might have to thin the frame a bit to make everything line up. Do check the specs as well, to make sure how much thickness the DW will take and still match up with your already installed cabinets.

One other negative might be limiting the amount of storage directly next to the range. Depending on how much range-related storage you need, you might have to move away from the range in order to get something you need (pots, pans, bakeware, utensils, etc). Also, my dishwasher handle sticks out beyond the countertop overhang and the dishwasher door sticks out a little further than my cabinetry doors. Depending on how close you like to get to the countertop for work next to the range, you might find it less comfortable. I certainly wouldn't find having a dishwasher next to the range a deal breaker if it's the best layout you can achieve with the given space.

The granite installers should mount a metal dishwasher bracket from the front top of the end panel across to the front top of the next cabinet - this provides a place to fasten the dishwasher mounting screws, and will help hold the end panel. Also, they'll run a bead of adhesive on top the end panel to further secure it to the granite. Talk to them to make sure they do. Beyond that, screw a 1x2 or 1x4 to the wall across the back to support the granite, put another vertically to secure the side of the panel, then fasten the bottom of the end panel by nailing it to a 1x1 strip screwed to the floor.

Got it. Thanks for the suggestions. Ordering a piece of filler would take at least a few weeks (every re-order on this project has), and I'm not keen on delaying this thing even more...but I do have some solid stock that looks like it would accomplish the same thing if cut to size. The Kitchen Place: In the photo you posted of the panel without overlay, it looks like it sticks out about as much as the doors. Is that just my eyes playing tricks on me (i.e., that this really isn't a big deal and isn't something I should even be thinking about)? Perhaps better phrased: what would you all do? Leave it alone, or add the 3/4" thick stock to get things close to even? Thanks!!

Not panels for sure--the appliances wouldn't fit! I have no idea if mine have finished sides or not. They aren't at all visible.

Appliances would fit if you planned the run so the space between the panels was still the 30" or 24".

Thanks for the input, just trying to figure out if the naked sides would be visible or not.

If you're concerned, you can get (maybe) a finished side without going all out for a panel. They shouldn't show, especially the dishwasher.

Our cabinets came with finished sides to match the interiors of the cabinets (frameless).

Depends entirely on the cabinet line being used, the appliances being used, and the design. There is not a one size fits all answer.

I dunno, Sophie. I think if I can see the inside of your dishwasher cabinet, the DW is probably not in correctly. :)

On the installation of the DW. If you have stone then the DW will be screwed into the framing of the cabinets on the sides. It is a tricky process and you can damage the cabinet fronts if you are not careful. There are two "plugs" on the side of the DW, remove them, then you have to add a clip to hold the DW to the screw. You must align the screw holes so it goes into a substantial part of the framing of the cabinet. Always pre-drill the hole. And the screw holes will also determine how flush your DW will be with the base cabinets. And then replace the plugs....

In our 2011 kitchen we had 2 clips epoxied to the underside of the granite and the DW was attached to them. In our 2016 kitchen we went with a piece of plywood that we had lying around placed on top of the DW insulation to act as a wedge to keep things in place. There seem to have been a couple of wedgie pieces on the sides, although they appear to have shifted. (DH is crawling around with a flashlight to answer this question.) While this may seem to be one of our brilliant DIY ideas, apparently it was the for-real plumber who suggested this arrangement. It seems likely that clips to be epoxied to the underside of the granite were provided, but the piece of plywood works fine.

There is no point in getting a finished end panel for the DW or stove space because no one will ever see it. If for some reason you wanted to be double sure, you'd order a "finished end" for the cabs in question vs. an end panel. We have finished ends on the uppers next to the stove.
