Bathrooms without bathtubs
Comments (61)This must be a regional thing because where I live (in the San Francisco Bay Area) a bathroom with a shower, sink and toilet is considered a full bath, not a 3/4 bath. My DH is a realtor and I confirmed this with him. I do think people here expect bathrooms that will be used by kids to have bathtubs, but master bathrooms are different. Adults just don't usually take baths. Maybe it's because we don't have time. I used to enjoy baths but haven't taken one in quite awhile. In an area which is prone to droughts, a large tub is wasteful. Even if water were plentiful, it also takes a lot of energy to heat the water for a bathtub. As people become more concerned about their carbon footprints and green building practices, the large tubs that were popular in the '80s and '90s may become obsolete. I had a friend who lived in a Victorian which had one bathroom on the second (bedroom) level with a lovely claw-foot tub and no shower. Her entire family bathed in a little shower off the kitchen, which was quite a trek from their bedrooms. To me, that really illustrates our society's preference for showers. So if you prefer showers to baths, skip the tub and go for that luxury shower....See Moretiling above fiberglass tub unit. and constructing walls to unit
Comments (6)Ezzie, I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but putting travertine next to fiberglass seems like hanging a crystal chandelier over a card table. Maybe you could remove the surround, replace the tub with a solid one ($$$), and tile the surround and floor? Then you'd have higher quality materials across the board. I've got a heavy old porcelain coated tub and I ripped out the nasty fiberglass surround, put 3 or 4 ml plastic sheeting on the studs, cement board, and tiled it with porcelain wall tile. John Bridge has an outstanding tiling forum to answer all your questions. I would either go all out for the great bathroom or save your money....See MoreBathroom sink/tub/lighting selection
Comments (1)I love the kohler memoires collection and the lines of it. If you dont mind the cleaning/drying around the base of it. I like it so much I wouldnt mind taking a towel around it daily if needed, its worth it to me for that raised design it has. In a kitchen different story an undermount is nicer, but you arent going to have the same sort of cleanup on a bathroom counter as a kitchen counter. We have a kohler memoir toilet and its pretty, still looks new after 3 years. We bought a one piece granite top for the vanity with a sink already undermounted or I would have done the memoir sink too....See MoreSmall bathroom / tub configuration dilemma
Comments (6)I am not a lover of old tubs and I like saokers . But that said I need a to scale floor plan of the whole space and also what is next to it and out the hall. There is no way to know what size tub without gutting the space BTW and forget corner tubs never a good choice.I think you have space for the length since that cabinet storage can be removed. Gut the bathoom then you will see exactly how much space you have. Find a friend where you can shower and get the pumber to make sure the toilet functions every night....See Morecpartist
