New build, too many options
Comments (11)+1 for geothermal. 12-acres of land would give you the possibility to really weigh the cost of geothermal vs. solar. I would look at open loop if you were planning on having a well as your source for drinking water or a horizontal loop to mitigate the cost of drilling, since you have so much land. When weighing the cost of geothermal vs. solar PV, look at the estimated annual savings geothermal will ‘generate’ in kW/yr. over more conventional heating, cooling and domestic hot water heating. Then use that figure of ‘saved kW/yr.’ by geothermal to see what a comparable solar PV system would cost to install and maintain, don’t forget to do the entire life cycle analysis including replacement costs of storage batteries, inverters etc. A solar PV array is subject to severe storm damage where geothermal is not; consider annual cost of insurance as well. I would imagine geothermal beats solar PV by a country mile. Of course if you have deep pockets you can have both! IMPO SR...See MoreCan lighting, too many options, need help.
Comments (2)Because of the maker of can lights (don't broadcast light, more directional), they don't light the room the same as a typical flush mount or even chandelier. Spacing typically 4-6 feet apart (closer is more in kitchen). For your space you are close, but IMO, you would want a minimum of 2 rows of 4, other otherwise the lighting will not fill the space like you might want, and you may need additional with using small cans and or depending on joist locations, the layout may have to be manipulated to work as well....See MoreHardwood flooring - too many options!
Comments (5)"It seems that everything seems to have some bad reviews out there." Sure they do. If you can sift through the 'noise' you can get a more realistic feel. Larger mass producers will have far more negative reviews mainly due they don't have much if any control over what happens after the sale, not to mention the enormous volume they do. That's hard to see when just starting out when you don't know who is who. Negative reviews come mainly from frustration and disappointment due to lack of good installers (rampant today) that don't know how to handle basic installation do's and don'ts. A lot more to the story....See More48" Wolf Range and Hood, too many options! help!
Comments (20)I have addressed this type of system often enough to not want to do it again. You are welcome to search for comments. Instead, I suggest you imagine a meter per second rising cooking plume being deviated to the (tiny) entrance aperture of the downdraft, taking into account that the velocity of the hood air current a small aperture dimension away from a hood aperture is a fraction of the velocity at the hood produced by the hood blower. Somehow this pittance of transverse air flow at the plume is supposed to completely remove the vertical momentum of the plume and make it horizontal. Leave these devices to what they can accomplish -- collecting a part of a back burner's steam plume -- and embrace the fact that configuration deviations from standard commercial practice mean reductions in efficiency and/or performance. Even a real hood on its side attempting to do this would have to have a lot higher flow rate than when it is above and letting the natural momentum of the plume bring the plume to the hood. One of the smaller sized turbofan engines would probably work as a blower, but might be a tad noisy. And if the plume can be fully deviated to horizontal, so can the burner flames....See Morekcandmilo
