Moving West...advice please
Comments (3)Hey, Adam, good luck with the change of venue. Salt Lake City is quite beautiful. I have moved with as many as one hundred plants in my crazier days. It isn't the heat, it's the light. In the back of a moving truck they will be fine for several days, I wouldn't even try watering any but the thirstier ones. In any vehicle with windows through which sun can shine you must block them up consistent with commonsense and road safety or put a layer of newspaper over the plants. BTW your description of the last large growing case you made sounds excellent for elvinwei's uses. You might want to describe it again in his/her thread assuming you don't have enough to do getting things road ready. H...See MorePernell Roberts (Adam Cartwright/Trapper John) has died.
Comments (15)I loved that show, and he was so handsome. The newspaper article said he left the show early because he thought it was unrealistic for three grown men to be living with their father and having to ask his advice and permission for every little thing. He's the last one of the 4 to pass away. It was a different kind of Western because it was less violet than others....See MoreAdam vs Chris..can't believe it
Comments (33)I used to think that Adam was kind of arrogant until he landed in the bottom three a few weeks ago. His demeanor was exactly the same as when he was one of 'the top chosen' - a very gracious smile *instantly* and he remained gracious through the entire "bottom three" process. That really changed my perception of Adam. The same thing happened last night - I DVR'ed it and watched his exactly first facial movement in slo-mo - the same as before. An instant smile followed by an instant embrace. I thought that was quite remarkable. From Kris's initial reaction, I kind of felt that Kris felt he didn't 'deserve' to win, which is just a *shame*. Each sings in a different musical genre and I felt that each was equally as good in their own genre. However, I felt that after hearing Cook perform, to be honest I thought David Cook was better in general than either Adam or Kris. Adam sometimes screeches (to me) but he does it in key - that's just remarkable. Cook is always in key and never screeches at all. However, my preference in music is the Kris/Gokey style by far. If I voted in these contests, I honestly don't know who I would have voted for. I've never bought any song or recording from any of them. I guess I'm not their target audience *LOL*...See Morehelp with west/partial/dappled sun garden bed
Comments (13)Blakrab has some good suggestions, as does wantonamara. I understand the impulse to suggest japanese maple -- I too think the esthetic might work well, but concur it isn't ideal as it's not very drought tolerant. I might consider one of our redbud trees however as an anchor. I like the interesting architecture of some of the weeping forms, and I believe they are often grafted, so the finished height is relatively pre-defined -- i.e. they are less likely to outgrow the space. 'Traveler' is a weeping cultivar of the Texas redbud, and Ruby Falls has attractive bronze leaves until the temps climb into the 80's that might contrast nicely against your pale brick. Underplantings might include a number of salvias, ornamental grasses, Santa Rita cactus, or other plants that would harmonize with the colors of Redbud. If you are going for a cool palette, consider silver foliage (lamb's ear, provence lavender, artemisias) and bronze foliage (purple fountain grass is probably annual for you.) and pink/mauve lavender blooms of e.g. salvii greggii "mystic purple". Mex. oregano (poliominthes) and native fragrant aster (for fall blooms) would likewise look nice, but might outgrow the space....See More
