Your favorite climber for pergola - can only get 1
Comments (12)njmomma, I was going to mention white "Maman Cochet" until I saw which zone you lived in. If I understand you correctly, you can only buy one plant, which would mean it would need to grow to be c. 20 feet tall so it could grow up, over, and down the other side of the pergola. I've never grown "Deuil de Dr. Reynaud" but its the type of Bourbon I love, rose-pink bordering on cerise, showing a luxerious plushness of bloom. la brea: 3 questions about your rose - how healthy is your "Deuil de Dr. Reynaud"?, must you spray it? -how big does it get? -what type of fragrance does it have? It is said to be floriferous and fragrant, which would get my vote for a pergola. njmomma, I've searched for D. de Dr. R" , it is presently available from roguevalleyroses.com, if you decide on buying one. There is a modern climber that I love because it has a more natural bloom style than a typical modern H.T. and reminds me somewhat of the Old Garden Tea named "Anna Olivier" but it is more cold hardy, it's called "Autumn Sunset" and it re-blooms better than any other modern climber that I've ever seen, in shades of apricot, pink and yellow and buff-tan. Hortico often sells it. Like many climbers, it takes 3 years (sometimes 4) to reach its full size which in your climate zone could be c. 20 feet tall. Comments (5)Obviously the popular and safe bet is New Dawn, however bloom varies for some as far as repeat. It is definitely most vigorous though and easily gets to 20ft once it matures. Mine is in it's 1st year and it is every bit of 9ft right now and still going. New Dawn is mostly a white, with a pink tinge to it. From a distance it tends to look mostly white though or faintly pink. Many people claim New Dawn doesn't have much of a fragrance, but mine definitely has one, especially when there are many blooms on at one time. It's certainly not strong, but what the blooms lack in strength, they make up for in numbers. Where exactly are you training it on your porch? Are you putting up white lattice, along the fence, etc? I am SURE there are people with many more suggestions and even better ones from their own experiences. Here is a link that might be useful: HMF New Dawn...See MoreEvergreen fast growing climbers
Comments (5)Denise, at the very least, we need to know where you are located to make suggestions. In many areas, the list of evergreen climbers is very short and none come to mind that would rapidly achieve the height you want - at least none that I would recommend with a clear conscience. You might be better off with some narrow evergreen screening but what that might be is determined best by where you live. Fill out your Member Page with at least your climate zone and growing conditions or amend your request with this info. Comments (6)I used Silver Lace over part of the pergola that covers a portion of my pool patio. Pergola is about 9' tall, about 40' wide and 16' deep. Planted two vines, one over the arched arbor that leads into the pool area. The other vine went up against the pergola. The Silver lace was to cover about half of the pergola, a few New Dawn rose climbers were to cover the other half. Planted the vines a few years ago, they were about 5' tall when planted. The arched arbor is in the bottom left corner of the following photo. You can barely see the vine I planted against the pergola, but you can see the unweathered support pole I used to train it, it's leaning against the second pergola post from the left. By late summer the vines were flowering and had grown over the top of the arbor and over the top of the Pergola. Here's a photo I took today, the vine has grown about 9' vertical to the top, then the full 16' depth of the pergola: I had this same vine when I lived in Wisconsin, on a lake about a half-hour north of MKE. Here in CT it's done well through several winters. No issues. I've seen Silver Lace listed in some places as invasive, but it's never strayed by root, nor has it crowded out some of the other plants near it in the gardens. I think it's just a rigorous climber. The flowers are white and somewhat delicate looking. I guess that's where the "lace" in the name comes from. The petals, when they fall, are not a nuisance. I don't consider it to be a dirty plant in terms of shedding. It's been winter and wind hardy, and provides a nice dappled shade in the summer....See MoreLilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca
