Honed carrera vs polished carrera?
Comments (7)I have a Restoration Hardware vanity with their honed carrera marble top. So far, no stains, but I do not use much of any products in there that might stain. The crate said that the top has been sealed. You definitely want to seal marble. I would imagine that some more harsh products (like hair color, etc) would certain stain marble. You also need to worry about etching, which is (as I understand) caused by products that are not pH balanced (certain cleaners, etc). As a result, I specifically selected some hand soap that is pH balanced. When installing a new mirror a few weeks back, I was wearing a new pair of dark denim shorts. Leaning over the vanity, I ended up rubbing off a LOT of blue dye onto the marble top. I was very concerned that the stain might be permanent, but it wiped off with just water on a rag. Overall I am really pleased with the look of the vanity and have not had any problems (with staining or etching). The vanity is stunning, especially the marble top. I intend to continue to be careful with the marble and hope for the best, although I know at some point I will likely get a stain or etching....See MoreAre all honed counters difficult to maintain??
Comments (7)When we were trying to decide on counters (we also wanted matte black or gray -- and were fixated on honed AB until I read all the negative things about it on GW) we got samples of honed Caesarstone in various black and gray colors (a finish similar to leather Silestone, I think). We also got samples of soapstone. We abused all of them with oil left on overnight, a lemon half left on for hours, vinegar, wine, etc. The honed Raven C'stone (which was our favorite) held up well -- easy to clean, didn't stain easily -- but the soapstone was even better. And we like the idea that if -- when -- the soapstone scratches we can just sand the scratches out, or live with them. We like the idea of patina and we thought the soapstone would age better than the CS. We got a great deal on the soapstone from our fabricator (just a bit more than the C'stone) so we went with soapstone although I think the C'stone would have been great. We'll see, I guess. The soapstone should be installed in about 2 weeks....See MoreCaesarstone vs Silestone vs Cambria vs Zodiaq quartz countertop?
Comments (43)We have polished Organic White countertops. We also get subtle metal marks that won't come out. These counters are just a few months old. No one else would notice it, but I certainly do. I would recommend getting a sample of the quartz you are considering and testing it yourself. Maybe we're just unlucky? Although, the number of websites that say "quartz doesn't stain" seem to be equalled by the number of websites that say "here's how to get stains out of your quartz". We haven't tried Magic Eraser and it is somewhat discouraged since it is abrasive, but we may try that next....See MoreSilestone quartz countertops - polished vs suede finish
Comments (12)To me the polished shows every smudge and finger print. The suede doesn't show fingerprints at all. Also, it looks whiter to me with the Suede. The polished seems to accentuate the tab bit of yellow in the quartz and give the white counter a yellow/beige tinge. Since, we went with white cabinets in a kitchen with southeast facing light (bright), we went with the suede finish. The suede white color goes nicer with our white cabinets, you don't have glare from the sun like you do with polished, and it is easier to keep looking clean b/c it doesn't show smudges or fingerprints....See Morebarncatz
