Shiloh cabinets arrived-builder ordered wrong glaze
Comments (47)Hi all - I first want to say I am a new member (login wise anyway), but have been reading your wonderful posts and getting ideas for my own new kitchen for over a year now. My install started yesterday (finally!) and I wanted to say Thank You so much for all the ideas/ inspiration/ advice! You are all fabulous! anncamp - This is a very sensitive topic for me since I was (and still somewhat am) in a very similar situation as you - and it was also with an Authorized dealer of Shiloh cabinets! My (main but not only) issue was that I requested 13" depth upper cabinets and the KD ordered 12" depth. They are the light painted inset cabs with cafe brushing/glaze, so matching the remake cabs to the other (correct) cabs has been next to impossible. After 2 tries (over "many" months of time), Shiloh almost got it right. I am taking my chances and putting them up, with the promise that Shiloh will send someone here to better match any that look to be a problem (after reading a post above though, i'm not sure I want to attempt this.) After almost a year of living with a torn up kitchen and having kitchen cabinets sitting in several rooms of my home while I battled with my KD (who also owns the Company and at this point I feel is nothing but a weasley (sp?) con man) and the Shiloh rep, I have some advice that I think might help. #1 - Do Not Settle or allow yourself to be bullied / manipulated into settling for something you did not order. Please remember - cabinets are a LOT of money and you work hard for your money, and you have to live with the final result for many years to come. It is not your responsibility to pay for someone else's mistakes, it's theirs! Hopefully you have a contract to back you up in case things get worse. (My KD tried so many games to get me to settle - blowing up, playing the poor me, then talking nicely and trying to convince me (and others) that I was just nervous, threatening me ... just thinking about all of the crap I endured is making me mad all over again %-) #2 - If you have not yet paid in full, DON'T yet. #3 - Do Not install those cabinets until you are absolutely sure you want them, or unless you get it in writing (with signatures) that if you don't like them after install that they can be returned for the ones you actually ordered or you will receive a full refund. Whether it's true or not I don't know, but I was told that if you install them they can claim that as acceptance, or play the game that they are used now. (My KD and rep tried to get me to install part of the order while I waited for the remake of the other cabs and I said "Absolutely NOT". I got the sense that they knew I was no dummy and meant business.) #4 - Document all communications in writing, especially if you agree to any changes - make sure these are documented "precisely" with signatures. You will need this if it ever has to go to court. Good luck ann, and please keep us posted an how things work out for you. Hopefully it will work out better (and quicker) than my situation. - littleitaly...See MoreReview my plans for stacked inset cabinets please
Comments (16)Thanks cpartist and mikomum. I must say, you may both be neater than I. I cannot put the sink the in island because that would create chaos there. I need the island to be a clean, clear, undisturbed oasis of plain counterspace for wrapping, art projects with DS, meal prep while interacting with family and guests. I also don't want to have to move any plumbing. Re. the cabinets over the sink. Its so interesting to hear your thoughts on this. I am trying to address the depth piece mikomum with doing glass cabinets to left of sink but envision a kind of library/1920's butler pantry feel from the cabinets going to the ceiling and wrapping around that sink corner. The glass cabs was actually a HUGE compromise to DH. I'm still getting comfortable with it b/c like I mentioned, I am not a neatnik...am planning on how to manage the interiors of those cabinets. So glad I'm not the only one here on the holiday (for some...guess it's not a holiday for all)! Sigh...let me have another look. My mom has warned me against the "heaviness" of the upper cabs which is why I finally gave into the glass cabs. But I will look again. Thanks for commenting. I love this community of others who are in knee deep on all this stuff!!!...See MoreBarker Cabinets - Kitchen Designer/layout help?
Comments (65)If your price is double, I have doubts if there is an apples to apples comparison happening. First, is the quote in the Full Access line? Omega Custom Framed cabinets will not be price comparable to Full Access. That is the fully custom division, with a price to match he possibilities. Second, did you just have them do a box to box comparison, via a list of components, or were they free to design the space with all of the needed side cover panels, molding pieces, and other required finishing touches? If they gave you a COMPLETE designed quote, and your Barker quote is lacking in the needed accessory parts, then that is not a true comparison. Accessory parts and pieces can easily add 30% to a quote from either company. Third, are you comparing the single color available finished cabinet to the multiple choices of standard finished cabinet? Not unfinished to finished. Or standard finish color to an upgraded finish color, like with a glaze or distressing. Comparing unfinished and unassembled to finished and assembled is no where near apples to apples. Although I no longer work with the line, I still find them an incredible value for someone who wants frameless cabinets but doesn't want the price of the Euro imports. Not to say that they are cheap, as no quality frameless line will be. Frameless is usually more expensive in the US than framed, simply because it is not readily available or "standard"....See MoreSomeone with Shiloh frameless cabinets- please help me!!
Comments (46)Cabinet margins run 30-50%. 20% discount would be on the low % for such a major snafu, but it leaves them making enough out of the sale to actually care and respond if you have an issue down the road. If you strip all of their profit out of the sale, that's much less likely to be the case. One option that could be offered is upgrading to some of the things that you cut out to make budget. Whatever that might be, if it were easy to add post install. Like a fancier crown, or that double tiered cutlery divider....See More
