Having a few problems!! Please Help!!
Comments (3)Lori, there 3 things for you to do: 1. get a shoplight and hang it 10 inches above your Lovelies. Shoplight in Walmart is $6.97, 2 48 inch growlights $11 the same place, couple plant chains, hooks - to hang it, timer the same place - $5, extension cord. 2. You need to repot them - 2 times a year is perfect - once a year is a must. You can use the same type of soil - just add some perlite to it to make it more breathable- at least 1/3. Yes - you are right - stick to 3 to 4 inch pots. (1/3 of the leaf diameter. 3. Get an African Violet fertilizer - and use it half dose. It what you should do to keep them blooming. Another thing from a fellow addict - do not reproduce same MIL or WM violets over and over again - give the babies to your friends. There are 15000 registered violets of shapes and hues to die for - and you need to try at least some of them. Irina...See MoreHosta Problems - Need Advice
Comments (14)Well Ken I'm not even anywhere close to the MD line. No worries about humidity where I live. I wish there were so I could grow the 'jungle effect' I love. LOL! My 'homemade stuff' is a mix of bot plant soil & soilless mix so it's nice and fluffy with bone meal & charcoal mixed in in small amounts. It is not just 'any ol garden dirt out of whereever in the garden'. It's in all my planters including two others with Hostas - one with Tatoo & one with Striptease - and they are doing just fine. I also have a Bressingham Blue which is planted in 'just plain old dirt' and it is doing fine. While I'm not saying it's impossible, I don't think the soil is the problem. I really can't recall whether there is a drainage hole in either pot and they are way too big to pick up and examine now. That said, I'm pretty sure they all have drainage. As I said, the begonias are doing fine though perhaps I do need to be attentive to less water (though that is not usually a problem *I* have -- sometimes DH gets loose on the premises). I take the comments about the light situation quite seriously though. Maybe I'll replace the Twilight with Aspidastra! I believe the Guac gets enough sun as its at the front of the porch area and the porch is south facing. I also have a Fatsia in there in the opposite corner from the Twilight & it does fine (in that same old soil). I'll move the surviving Guac to the garden itself where my other hostas are all doing just fine (in their garden dirt with a little added bone meal). One question that doesn't seem to have been addressed, or at least in a direct sense, is why are the edges of the leaves on Guac rolling under? Is this a common indicator of something?? Many thanks for all your help folks. Holly...See MoreDo you need to divide your hosta every few years?
Comments (9)I divide Ginko Craig every 3 or 4 years to maintain its elongated leaves...otherwise the leaves widen out... I also divide Golden Tiara periodically since I find it looks better (more vigorous) when it has about 20 eyes max. Papou What Papou is talking about is a choice not a need and I divide some for appearance or space questions. I've also noted that Tiara's seem to make the fair ring effect fairly quickly, still the plant doesn't "need" to be divided. PS if Papou says so listen! There is no better grower with sounder advice on this forum....See MoreNeed help ID'ing a few of my hostas
Comments (17)Beth- At the HL, click on a letter of the alphabet, then scroll up and down to find the hosta you are looking for, then click on it. Tah Dah! You will see photos submitted by hundreds of people over the years. At the top of the page of the specific hosta you select, will be a link to more info collected from several sources at MyHostas.net. Database. There is also the American Hosta Society Registry, which is searchable, to find the official registration info on a hosta. -Babka...See MoreKindness Matters (NE Ohio 6a)
