Outdoor Carpet on Concrete

We bought this house two years ago. Previous owner had outdoor carpet around the concrete pool deck. At first, I hated the look but over two years I've really come to like the carpet as it's not slippery at all when wet for the kids. At this point though it needs to be replaced. Husband and I tore the old carpet up and what lies beneath is a mess of old yellowed carpet glue.

Question is- does all the old adhesive need to come up before new carpet adhesive and carpet is laid down? I know for sure that it would need to if we were putting something down that required a total level surface, but since it's just a newer version of the same carpet does it matter?

The old adhesive does not have to be completely removed. Here is what I would do in a DIY situation for myself or if I was hired to do the job:

* Scrape it down to a thin residue and remove any adhesive that is not well bonded. * Apply a skim coat of an "outdoor approved" cementitious underlayment (this isolates the existing adhesive and avoids a potential "adhesive incompatibility" issue).

* Install the new outdoor carpet using the lowest VOC outdoor carpet adhesive possible in my market area.

Warning: Do not be seduced into using an adhesive remover. Bad things happen.

Well, in my area of VA, the costs for installing tile, stone, or stamped concrete are not going to be wildly out of line with one another. However, the costs of using real stone vs. something like tile can vary greatly. For example, we are using a flagstone for our front porch and front walk...there were stones for $150/ton and there were stones for $500/ton. I love natural stone. That would always be my first choice, but I'm concerned that with your stone fireplace it could potentially be a little over the top. If the stone fireplace is to be the focal point of the space (and it really should be), I do think a dyed concrete would look nice. Personally, I don't think that mixing natural stone and stamped concrete is a good look. Honestly, I really think that this is just a matter of personal preference. Which do you like more? They're all fine.

Firstly, I did not recommend OxyClean (nor would I do so). I have never used it and cannot comment on it. I have used PURE sodium percarbonate purchased under the brands (Ecover and BioVert). PM2, the fact that this article refers to sodium carbonate as baking powder (more than once) shows the lack of understanding (and fact checking) by its author. Sodium carbonate is washing soda (or soda ash) - DIFFERENT than baking powder (sodium bicarbonate). There is also a difference in using liquid hydrogen peroxide and dry sodium percarbonate. I think further investigation by PM2 would be in order. This article contains inaccuracies. While hydrogen peroxide solutions have the advantage over powdered products of being sold ready to use, powdered bleaches are easier to handle, have better storage stability and do not need any added chemicals to enhance stability. Powder versions also contain higher percentages of hydrogen peroxide (liquid versions are a high percentage of water).
