Good, inexpensive cabinet makers in NJ/NYC area?

I'm opening up my (small) kitchen and DR to create one large space and as a result will have one wall of countertop and appliances. I'll have an island which will house my sink, DW, garbage. It's a pretty simple design but works best for my space. We're adding a door so that we can access our patio directly. Do you recommend a slider or standard 3 ft glass door? I want as much light as possible and prefer the slider - just hate that the screens rip w/in a few years and can have track problems. More importantly I understand that cabinets are the single most expensive item and want quality but do not need high end or any custom sizes since I'll essentially have a galley style kitchen. I'd love to find a local cabinet maker. Thanks!

check out Royal at http://www.royalcabinet.com/ , I am starting my kitchen remodel soon with a local cabinet maker too, so I had some paint swatches on my desk at the office, one of my coworkers saw that we started talking, she redid her kitchen a year ago too, and that's the cabinet company she used. she told she spent yrs on research all the companies. She showed me some pictures of her kitchen, they look great, like they are in a magazine from a million dollar home. not sure if they are cheap thou, but if you are going with a local maker, the cabinets are 'custom', they might not be custom sized, but they will be custom-made for you.

I second Gracious Home. Simon's Hardware has some stuff. AFNY has a good collection as well, especially showers where they actually turn the shower on to see if you like it. But its a bit high-end although they do stock Hansgrohe, Grohe, and Kohler. But you need an appointment and they are snotty. If you can deal with snotty, its a good place to look at stuff - I made several decisions there. Plus they stock a LOT of stuff inside cabinets - not visible to public, but if you see something online or in their catalog and its not on display, they will show it to you if they have it. They have no patience for people who cannot make up their mind the first time. Like I said, if you are okay with their snottiness, its a really good place to check stuff out. After Gracious Home, they had the most stock.

We used a fantastic independent cabinet maker, Richard Sanca, to do a very large built-in bookcase in our brownstone. He is detail-oriented, a real artist, well priced and his work is impeccable. We looked at a few places but ended up getting the best pricing from a local NJ guy, website is www.selectivekitchendesign.com. I plan on reaching out to them soon to do our master bathroom, not sure if Shiloh might be too much $$ compared to stock cabinets for a bathroom. Best of luck with whoever you choose. Traciel - I was in the processes of looking at cabinets on Long Island and the prices I was quoted, without any bells and whistles, was insane. Also, I wanted a medium toned wood stain that did not have orange undertones. I only saw this stain on very high end lines. Lastly, I wanted an old world look with inset style cabinetry, which was another significant price up charge at most places. We planned a family trip to Lancaster for a holiday weekend and I Planned to visit Amish cabinet makers. I researched garden web and someone had mentioned Blue Mountain woodwok in Bath, PA. We stopped there and we were impressed with their quality and range of available stains. They offered inset style for a fair upcharge. OVer the next few months, I worked closely with their kitchen designer Patti through blue print changes and my preferences. Actually sliders have come a long way from those of the past. They stay on track better now.
