Need help deciding between layouts
Comments (25)I thought a while about your conflicting desires. I think the best way to get what you want is a peninsula layout - but not narrow Option 2. The biggest problems with your KD's Option 2 are that (1) it's so narrow and (2) the water source is too far away from the peninsula. With a narrow base of the "U", you end up with people trapped inside and you have very little room to work - the two biggest reasons people don't like many peninsula layouts. By widening the base of the "U", you now have a space that's spacious enough for two people to work in but not so wide that it makes it difficult for one person. So, fixing those issues, I think I've covered the spirit of your wants. Yes, it has a prep sink, but the sink is a corner sink so it doesn't interfere with the the large expanse of counterspace you want. The base of the "U" is 10' wide - a nice space. There are two layouts. Both are basically the same, but they differ in two key points: (1) pantry & refrigerator locations and (2) depth of peninsula. Pantry & refrigerator... In Layout #1, the refrigerator and a 9" wide tall utility cabinet are in the space formerly occupied by the washer & dryer. Using Bpathome's ideas, the pantry is located in the current hallway entrance. One thing I noticed is that the hallway is 42" wide, not 36" - that's assuming the layouts are to-scale. I hope so b/c it makes a better pantry if it's 42" wide. In Layout #2, I switched the pantry & refrigerator locations - I put the refrigerator in the hallway entrance and left the pantry where you have it (the old washer/dryer space). Peninsula depth... In Layout #1, the peninsula is 42" deep. It's deep enough for the minimum 15" overhang and will give you some nice deep workspace. It's about an inch deeper than your KD's option #3. (The depth of the peninsula in your KD's option #2 was also unworkable.) In Layout #2, the peninsula is 54" deep - deeper than your deepest island in option #1. It includes not just the cabinets facing the Kitchen, but also a span of 12" deep cabinets facing the DR. They both add additional storage and add depth to the peninsula for an even deeper span of workspace. To gain those extra 12", the aisle b/w the peninsula and table was shortened by those 12", but at over 5' wide, it's still wide enough - especially since it's not a main thoroughfare. Layout #1: . Comments (13)mama goose_gw zn6OH, You've given us lots to think about here! Thank you so much!. I would be hesitant to put anything tall on the window wall as to not obstruct light and the view. The view really is our house's saving grace. Would it be awkward to place the fridge on the opposite wall? Where the wall ovens are? As we are moving walls, creating a built in or closet is definitely possible, my only concern is that the walls match on either side, in terms of width. We had also thought about opening the whole place up, but it seems a bit long and my husband (who does much of the cooking) cooks a bit like the Swedish chef, so some separation might be a good idea.:) The rangetop or range can vent straight out the roof, so it can go anywhere. If we were to keep it in the island we would put in a ceiling flush mount fan. We also want to preserve as much space in the kitchen as we can. We had originally hoped to put the range on the wall between the windows, but were told it would be very awkward to not have it centered there... Again thank you! I really appreciate your creativity....See MoreDeciding on a kitchen layout - need professional advice
Comments (0)I'm planning a big remodel and have already engaged with an architect and a general contractor. However, I feel like I may need additional help to come up with the most optimal and efficient kitchen layout. I'm looking for a designer with whom I could discuss pros and cons of different kitchen layouts based on the way that we use the kitchen. I'm not 100% sure how to find such a person. Most of the local kitchen designers seem to offer additional services, as a part of the whole package.... I'm aware that kitchen cabinet stores offer design services as well, but I think my kitchen is a bit tricky and I would like to get an opinion of a designer. Would on-line services such as Decorilla be a good option in this case? Any other options? Thanks!...See MoreHelp Decide Kitchen Layout and ....?
Comments (136)This would be my personal fav. Where I have the long scribble to the left end is a pull out reach in pantry similar to those shown by others. I added a small cabinet left of the range hood. The area above the sink are shelves. Not everyone likes shelves but I love mine. Mine are wood with a cork liner on top. All my every day dishes are an off white. They go from dishwasher to shelf in seconds. Plus, it’s simple but visually nice. If budget is tight shelves will be cheaper. Also, with this layout you could do “plain” laminate/Formica countertops on the perimeters (there are some very cool laminate‘s these days) and splurge on a beautiful stone or quartz for the island. To free up more space do corner banquette seating and add two chairs on the outside. Or, if too cramped you might do a banquette corner seat for four. Edited:( not my rendering below, I’m just tweaking it). You could keep the shallow cabinets shallow on the wall joining the living area. Or, do full depth base cabinets that would bump out five or six inches into the living room with an open pass-thru between the uppers and lowers into the living room. You could even put a 30” built-in beverage cooler/refrigerator in that section. The cooler would face front in the kitchen and have a dummy door on living room side. The other door would be accessible from the kitchen and living room. In a perfect world there would be a small prep sink but the world isn’t perfect. However...I think there isn’t enough of a walkway to spare a few inches for a bump out Into the living area? Is the floor plan to scale in that area as far as openings go?...See Morecherylbirth
